Has anyone deciphered all the instances angelic alphabet shows up in the demo? I only know the first saw arm encounter is "Mars"

If not I might do it myself

If you must blink, do it now.
Had a friend over and introduced her to the demo and she found a secret area on her playthrough! This game is the gift that keeps on giving.

She's never played a Taro Yoko game before (and is unlikely to go back and check out any of his older work), so we had a fun conversation afterward where I shared with her some of what transpired pre-Automata. :aaaaa: :words:

The name of the demo boss seems to be "Engels" or at least that's what I get from the text under its warning sign. Or it's an universal boss sign and they're just straight up called angels.

Is it Watchers time? Maybe it's Watchers time

E: Holy poo poo I got it. There's no X in celestial alphabet so "MARs" is probably meant to be "Marx". The bosses are Marx and Engels, both socialist philosophers

NICE.

That's exactly how I like it. Hopefully that chip won't be too far into the game.

Woke up this morning and felt a strange desire to browse the demos in the psn store. Boy am I glad I decided to do that! :v:

Nier is my favourite game of all time and Platinum games are 100% my poo poo so this demo fills me with so much joy. So glad to hear the music is going to be more of the same high quality ear-candy.

Finally managed to beat very hard. Not as bad as you'd think, since you can just skip past most of the enemies, but still thrilling (and heartbreaking to lose near the end). Unless I missed this earlier, I think it unlocked The first level of the weapon stories for the two swords you start with. If I was crazier I'd try beating it again to see if I can unlock the higher levels.

I loving loved Nier. The story was amazing, the locations and cutscenes and clothing design was superb. It made me feel weird and kind of sad, the world was so desolate.

Remember that desert town where everyone wore pyramid head hats and spoke an unknown language? Remember those kids at the scrapyard and one of them only had one arm?

And the stuff with Emil, he was my favourite character.

And then the midpoint of the game hits and you revisit all the previous areas but you're given a lot more tragic backstory about everyone and it's heartbreaking!!

And the game did so much weird poo poo, like the text adventure part. If Automata lives up to that legacy.....

The only thing lacking in Nier was the combat. Automata having Platinum Games style combat is going to be amazing.

I never expected Nier to get a sequel. I can't wait to play the demo later.

Sorry for the wall of text, just some thoughts.

How much dirt does he have on the SE higher-ups, do you think?

I did my first Very Hard run after realizing I could just kinda... ignore most of the enemies.

I'm sure it'd be more impressive if I killed everything but I'm happy enough to to make it that far so whatever. That being said I'm debating if I want to play Normal or Hard for my first full game playthrough. Normal because I want to see the story as fast as I can because I'm actually excited for it, or Hard because I enjoy giving myself a challenge in Platinum games.

I'm so excited :v:

I'm pretty sure even Taro Yoko has no idea how or why he keeps getting to make games.

Here's hoping he wakes up one morning and discovers he's in charge of Final Fantasy XVI.

I wouldn't be entirely surprised if they did love it. It'd be like how Murata decided on what could have been his deathbed, that he was going to quit his job to draw One Punch Man if he survived.

Platinum's full of people who are really good at game design, which means they notice talent in weird areas where people less equipped to examine these things just see the clunk.

All instances of celestial alphabet I could find in the demo

"MARs" or maybe rather "MARX" considering the distinction between the lowercase s and the name of the other boss. All three arms share the name.

"ENGELS" either "angels" in german but very likely to refer to Friedrich Engels considering the name of the saw arm boss.

The DOD/Nier staple human DNA "GACT" sequence appears in the explosion when Pod laser hits before dissolving into pretty particle effects.

Unfortunately that's all I could spot. I kept zooming into stuff like the communication screen but that only has plain english on it.

Probably the philosopher, yea, because Engels isn't actually a word (the plural of Engel (-> angel) is still Engel).

I would not be surprised to find out that was an influence on him along the line. I remember reading his thoughts on Caim and how any RPG hero would be neck deep in corpses by the end of the game. You have to murder tons of people on any given playthrough, but in a Neutral run, everyone has to die. And even then, the world is more than likely, irredeemably hosed anyway.

Actually a clever and well-read storywriter and director with a penchant for very grim but interestingly executed stories and very unorthodox gameplay design choices. Ended up working at a kind of a sweatshop studio mainly specializing in licensed titles and working with what he had spearheaded the notorious Drakengard series that later ended up spawning the semi-spinoff Nier that despite the technical difficulties was actually a total high point for the studio which even then died after it was released. So despite his skills he's been a bit unlucky in the past.

Seems to have friends in high places who recognize his talents and keep enabling his game development despite repeated commercial failures.

Taro Yoko is a Japanese game designer who's mostly known for directing action RPGs like Drakengard and Nier. His most notable feature is how flat out weird the worlds of the video games he directs are, with unique character/monster designs, unexpected revelations, and multiple endings that repeatedly change how one views the story of the game. He's admitted that a lot of this is just a marketing gimmick: he's not a big name working on a hot IP like Dragon Quest or Final Fantasy, so the only way he can make his games stand out and have some kind of market traction is if they're memorably bizarre enough. To his credit, he manages to handle it with a kind of Lynchian touch that makes a lot of the stuff that would normally seem like hamhanded showboating (one of the party members of Drakengard 1 is an out-and-out pedophile; another is a woman who eats babies due to her own infertility) feel quirky and unique rather than it feeling like a college freshman's first "extreme" screenplay.

To sort of change the topic a little, I remember back in the day when I used to hang out with some friends at an arcade in a local shopping street. There was this really long roof that some of us liked to climb up and walk up and down the thing for awhile. One time, though, one of my friends slipped and died from the fall.

He was completely motionless except for his “goods”…… It was an undeniably horrible event but it was still kinda funny to have noticed something like that. I remember laughing with the others about it.

All his interviews are great and should be read.
