I'd be going home in your position, TBH. The plains are loving brutal in the winter, that poo poo will kill you dead just like it freezes cows solid.

Literally no one expected this pedal roadblock, or the rear brake issues, or half the other poo poo that went wrong - like greybeard forums saying everything fits great if you just do a few minor adjustments. You've already put in a heroic amount of custom work with just your wits and what random stuff is lying around and are going to end up driving this thing in the great plains in the winter, which is foolhardy even if it does get moving - if you get stranded between major towns you could pretty easily die of exposure.

I hate to say it but I would scrub till less inhospitable weather comes along, or rather, assume you're flying/busing home and do whatever you can in the meantime to button it up and make it survive a winter without ending up full of rust and water. You've already made it way loving further than the last AI V8 swap that was attempted far from home. Maybe shoot for a victory lap around the yard, sans brakes?

Well, considering most quotes I was given started in the 2-3k range I'm still ahead in that regard.

But it wasn't just about saving money. It was about adventure, getting out and seeing new places, and just doing something considered impossible. And you know what? We did it. It's almost there.

I spent the night before last pretty much in full despair and anger mode, but now I'm excited again. Granted, it sucks to wait, but it's more time to get things planned out and shore up some funds. I can get those two last tires now. We cam get a proper exhaust, And time to do some more research on any other potential issues.

I have to talk to Dave and Dan about what the plan from here on out is, but I'd like to shoot for an April return to finish the last few bits and get this on the road.

Personally I'd hold off on the tires if you might end up putting a different rearend (chevy 14 bolt comes to mind... easily strong enough, less retarded bolt pattern, and you can probably find a way to put different hubs and brakes on the front to match it) in there that wouldn't require these stupid wheels and stupid tall tires.

So what's the full list at this point that remains?
- lights?
- brake pedal arm clearance
- exhaust
- more tires?
- have time for actual test-runs around town before driving off away from parts stores and machinists
- cooling system???
- tidy up wiring more if Dave didn't already do that
- heat, or aircon, which would probably be more use to you in Florida. I can't imagine where you're going to find an HVAC tech to do a custom refrigerant system for you though. :haw:
- wipers?
- reassemble bodywork
- horn?
- dual circuit brakes?

I can't guarantee it, but maybe I can find a project to buy in Colorado or Nebraska and drive home at the same time as you guys, since I've been looking for a cheapish good condition woodside GW for my wife. More support vehicles and gearheads with spare parts and tools in one place is probably a good idea. I'll try and convince chrisgt he needs to buy a new project too. It looks like a sidetrip to Valentine would only add 140 miles to the route home that I took last time, and would give you guys about 100 miles of backup vehicle presence with enough space for everyone, tools, and spare parts inside.

oh believe me I want it (the one at the machinists shop?), but that's for me. I need to dispose of a few more junk vehicles first to make space. A good condition Grand Wagoneer though? That's for her.

Wind in the midwest is something I wasn't even close to prepared for. Last time I was out there was in March, on the tail end of winter, in Indiana, and I ended up welding a loving bumper together in a muddy field after dark while it was snowing sideways. Then all my drat angle grinder cutoff discs blew away. I didn't even know they could blow away, much like your license plates.

Speaking of 0-60 times, whatever you get, double check its governed speed and the top gear ratio of the trans you will be using plus your rearend ratio and tire size against your desired cruising and max speeds. 2 stroke diesels generally don't turn as fast as 4 stroke ones (from what I have seen) and the bigger the motor the lower its governor is going to be. Looking for a new motor for my truck, literally every loving gearhead I talk to starts spewing a huge list of engines I have already considered and discarded as options because they would limit me to like 35mph flat out, and I usually just stop listening because the suggestions come faster than I can say why they won't work.

If you don't mind changing out the rearend to a taller ratio, it opens your options up considerably. I do mind on mine because it has 3 differentials that cost several thousand each to regear, but you only have one to mess with and there are plenty of excellent cheap rear diff options for a truck that size, so if you are up for it, it could be the right choice if it makes an engine you are considering work out.

Unless you are going to change out the steering column or do weird poo poo to move it over, or do flipped exhaust manifolds, I think you are probably going to be limited to inline motors. That being said, flipped manifolds on an LQ4 with a big turbo would be pretty cool :getin:

Remember that atlases have a fucky weird bellhousing not the usual gm V8 one or 60 degree v6 one. You can use a Colorado bellhousing from an nv3550 equipped truck to get to a bolt pattern you can probably use cheap adapter plates to go to that sm420 or an nv4500 though, not sure.

I don't think an nv3550 or ax15 is a good idea on a truck this big with a good engine or I would say slam a Colorado trans and an atlas 4200 in there.

I wish I got laid off so I could join this party.

Also, it just occurred to me that Rosie being on the bus is going to mean that this thread has come full circle from last time AI's holy warriors rode Greyhound. Before, they were the Disturbed, now they are the Disturbers.

Someone is going to have a life story of why not to ride Greyhound and it will involve a Seattle to Nebraska ride with a fellow passengers cat.

Holy poo poo, this thread exploded.

If you don't mind can you take a pic of the pop-up mechanism at the center that pulls on all 4 cables? I'm not quite getting how it works but I've got some ideas on making something that will work.

Edit: Thanks again to everyone in this thread, it makes me very happy. Bonus thanks to Dave and Tremek for being badasses.
Edit: here it is

I saw the diagram the first time, just didn't quite understand where cables were going. It looks to me like something that can be taken apart and replaced with a ratchet strap until it comes time to let it back down.

yikes, I was like a thousand posts behind on this thread.

Glad someone else mentioned the brake pedal vs header clearance thing, you definitely want at least a little space to let it move forward or you know it's going to interfere at exactly the wrong moment and someone's gonna get screwed in the rear end by 9 thousand pounds of goonfleet truckfuckery.

Do you have the diagnostic connector still present on the harness? Get or build an ALDL readout and see what the ECU is pissed about. They actually have rudimentary diag abilities, at least the 93 I keep working on does.

The best thing about rooms full of lead acid is that it's DC so if you touch it you can't let go, and the available fault current and circuit voltage is truly obscene so short circuits turn into high energy physics experiments very quickly. How many pounds of copper did you want instantly liquefied or vaporized? How many pounds of it do you want flung violently against the wall? OKAY
