I used to help my dad replace the tyres on his truck which ran split rims. As long as you clean the rust off (usually used a drill with a wire brush attachment) and deflate the tube before removing the tyre, it's all good. Never had any issues.

Worked for Mazda in the 1970s when they put a rotary in a Holden Kingswood
