I'd love to see Henry Cuellar get primaried. The dude is basically the definition of a Blue-Dog Democrat, and his seat is safe D as hell (it's literally east of San Antonio down to Laredo/Rio Grande City on the Rio Grande) so there's no risk it would ever flip to a Republican:

If you were to make a 'test' to identify good progressive candidates what kind of positive traits would define that term, and by what negative traits wouldyou idenitify 'crazies' and national socialists and poo poo like that
"What do you think of Stalin?
What do you think of Assad?
What do you think of Putin?"

If you get apologism for any of the above, you've got a 'crazy'.

So like if I say hey maybe we should stop training and arming and spending millions of dollars to send violent rebels and terrorists in to fight Assad, and maybe if we're serious about combating terrorism we should allow Assad to reestablish his secular state instead of trying our best to overthrow yet another state's existing regime only now in a more subtle way than we did in Libya and Iraq,

now I'm a crazy?

Or if I say Russia's not that great and neither is Putin but he's probably not the devil and in fact isn't one of the world's big problems because why would he be... I'm crazy?

Like you can be left wing and it's fine but once you start opposing the condoned imperialist line on things it's no good?

Breadallelogram posted:

does that count as apologism?
Slightly. I don't disagree that we should probably stop bothering to overthrow Assad (if nothing else because it's just not going to happen anymore, Assad's got too much foreign support and the rebels are a shadow of what they used to be). That said, "secular state" is an apologist term that really sticks in my craw. Assad's state may not be hyper-religious, but it's very Arab-supremacist and Alawite-supremacist, and the end result is you're trading religious supremacy for ethnic supremacy.

I'd also prefer a peace deal rather than Assad regaining any more territory militarily, because Assad re-establishing control of Syria militarily means lots and lots of mass graves.

I found a lot of the pointless, non-content posts to be hilarious.

And the off-topic conversations were the best part of the thread.

Spending 3 hours talking about 90s and 00s nostalgia in an election thread is kind of the greatest.

like i said, it was basically a chat thread.
I liked it as a chat/random topic thread. Also the thread never really turned toxic like a lot of the other threads here have. Even at its worst, the thread just moved too fast for that.
