Oath veteran checking in. I crashed and burned out of one of the previous threads a few years ago, and I have been goaded into trying again this year. Going to take it easy to start, I haven't painted since I failed out last time.

As for the monthly theme, uh, I guess I can say that this oath is dragon me back into painting? v:v:v Maybe I'll add something else that fits if I can get this done.

This is the first miniature that I have painted in something like two years, so I am pretty happy just to have done it, even if it took me all month and the camera reveals any number of problems. :) I did not manage to freehand a dragon or anything, so I am not claiming the theme for the month. Just happy to be back painting!

I will be claiming Backstory this month, as well as the Time to Relax theme:

Hundreds of restless boyz milled around the hold of the great space hulk, angry muttering breaking out into scuffles and grunts of pain. Guided by the maniacal genius of the resident Meks, the ship had landed in orbit of a rich, verdant world... one that had proved, impossibly, to be completely bereft of interesting life. Not that Orkz were opposed to gunning down vast herds of grazing animals, it just wasn't get amusing for long. The Boss had promised a scrap, and the mood was turning sour as the head Ork himself heaved into sight on a platform overlooking the bay. The crackle and squeal of haphazard amplification drew the baleful red glare of a thousand disappointed eyes. "Right lads, I's got bad news and good news. The bad news iz, da Mekz say dey need ten days to get us to some real scrappin', an that's no matter how hard I hit 'em." Shouts came up from the crowd, and more than a few bullets whined their way toward the platform in protest. "BUT!" the warboss thundered, drawing a brief pause from the crowd. "Da good news, dats time enough for some proper krumpin'! Get yer lads together, squigbeer for everyone and the best team iz first into the scrap when we get dere, right? Games on!" A great cheer went up from the crowd as enormous barrels were rolled into the hold; by the time the boyz were done with the game, they'd be close enough to a new target...

I couldn't imagine an Ork finding anything relaxing besides a solid sports riot, so I exchanged this guys weapons for scratch-built beer and a foam finger. :toot:

I am also claiming Box Art for this, as I did my best to copy the display job on reaper's site. My skills aren't quite up to par, so I fell short on several aspects, most notably the use marks on the sword and the woodgrain. :( I feel pretty good about the bone and the coat though, so there's that.

Also, as a pirate, I assume the Captain qualifies for the monthly theme of being water-themed.

I only oathed three snotlings this month, but then I went all in on basing and the theme, and ended up with a snotling harvest festival dioarama....

What's going on here? Well, one of these fine chaps is busy harvesting fall pumpkins:

This fellow is collecting some mushrooms and using them to pinata pumpkins:

Meanwhile, the last of the trio is using... honestly, I am not sure what... to make a harvest brew:

Closeups of the mushroom circle and the back of the snotling still:

I am pretty happy with how this came out - almost everything is scratch built from bits and parts. The only thing I would like to fix are the pumpkins; I bought them as a kit, was irritated by the moldlines, tried to fix them, ended up having to paint them to try to hide the cut marks, and you can still see moldlines anyway. Drill your pumpkins!

I don't know what those funny squid ships are from but the paintjobs people are putting on them are awesome.

Oath Complete!

Well, I only oathed a pair of grots this month, so here they are...

Wait a minute! Those aren't just any grots. That looks like Grot Cassidy and the Badmoon Kid, two of the infamous Wild Boyz raiders. Why those boys raided space lanes for years before they finally got chased off. They say that they finally chased them down to some dusty rock and they finally went down shooting, but some say a couple of them got clean away and the bodies were never fit for identification. You never know...

I am claiming the Jurnal because I got a little carried away with my basing and ended up building these guys a last-stand hacienda where they could go down shooting, old west style.

And just in case everyone isn't the sucker for old westerns that I am, I'll point out that I styled this on the final shootout from Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, as framed in the movie poster:

I am claiming the Jurnal on account of me having built the entire thing from parts of a WWII half-track, some leman russ pieces, and a bunch of plasticard. Including building the driver from bits and converting a grot into an impromptu gunner. :orks101:

Let's do the space-time warp again!

I, Ashcans, oath these 5 28mm Eldar miniatures (plus support weapon) for April

In the spirit of this month's jurnal, these figures were all originally produced for Rogue Trader, and go back as far as 1987 - three of them are actually from the period where the models all had individual names, rather than just being a specific troop/type. I'm planning on doubling down on the jurnal by giving them classic paint jobs as well. :toot:

Edit: I know the support weapon looks like it has some stuff on it - that's the remains of a previous paintjob that is particularly stubborn. It will be completely re-primed before painting, let me know if you need pictures of the post-prime model.

This is the first photo in the album and I thought something had happened to my monitor's colors. These remind me so much of looking through my friend's old Warham books and magazines. It was a color palette that only the models of yesteryear could pull off.

Thanks a lot, glad they achieved the nostalgia effect! They're sitting in my cabinet looking decidedly out of place from all my more modern pieces, but at least they're not relegated to storage now.
