I'm attempting to determine the codec of an audio file and am having little success. The file was taken off an old voicemail platform and I have no idea what format it was stored in. It could very well be a proprietary format. I've tried Gspot and it comes up with nothing. Are there other applications like Gspot that can scan an audio file and determine codec and other attributes?

Have you tried just opening it in an editor that supports binary files (e.g. Textpad, Notepad++) to see if there's any englishy readable header/leadin?

I'm pretty sure ffprobe (part of ffmpeg) is designed for exactly this type of thing.

If you happen to be on a Unix box or have cygwin installed, does 'file foo.audio' or whatever show anything useful?
