How the hell did Australia manage to vote a Trump-esque dickhead like Tony Abbot into Premiership anyways? Are things that bad down under compared to here? Have there been worse PMs before?

Just to check, is it basically impossible to watch anything on youtube because of the draconian internet laws?

The media here is massively in the tank for the Liberal party except for the two or three left wing papers we have which simply give both parties equal time because they're terrified of being called bias. So if Labor aren't on their A-game, whoever is in charge of the Liberal party (our right-wing party) has a huge advantage. Labor were seriously not on their A-game in the last election. Abbott happened to be in charge.

Liberal supporters refusing to donate over super changes
The Turnbull Government's superannuation policy has upset its base so much that Liberal MPs say some supporters are refusing to donate to the Coalition's election campaign.

As my colleague Eliza Borrello reports, the Government's May budget outlined a $1.6 million cap on the amount of money that can be held in a tax free retirement phase account by people 60 and over.

Under the plan anything beyond $1.6 million has to go into a separate account, with earnings to be taxed at 15 per cent. The budget also outlines a plan to introduce a $500,000 lifetime cap on after tax superannuation contributions, back dated to 2007.

Both policies have upset the Liberal base, with many seeing the $500 000 lifetime cap as retrospectively punishing people who made contributions in line with the rules at the time.

WA MP Ian Goodenough told the ABC that he and several other Liberal MPs plan to raise the concerns in the party room after the election.

I have received a volume of correspondence from constituents objecting to the changes, it is a significant issue in this election, however the dilemma is to identify another area of revenue to target given the constraints with the budget situation.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull says the changes will make the system fairer.

Sydney siege inquest: Head of police negotiation was 'managing five stand-offs at once'
By court reporter Jamelle Wells

The head of the police negotiation unit brought in during the Sydney siege was simultaneously managing four other high-risk stand-offs by phone, an inquest has heard.

The NSW Police Negotiation Unit Commander - codenamed Graeme - told the inquest he is one of only three full-time employees in the unit.

But he said at the time of the December 2014 siege the only full-time staff were himself and another negotiator codenamed Reg, who were working out of temporary offices.

Graeme said the unit has a number of part-time staff and he is responsible for coordinating it statewide.

The inquest heard Graeme's job involves giving advice about stand-offs via phone calls to his house around the clock.

During the Martin Place siege he worked a shift of 33 hours with no break.

Graeme said that during the 17-hour siege he was managing four other stand-offs, including an armed robbery and a separate incident involving a machete on the NSW Mid North Coast.

"Was it it the case that there was no-one else in the entire New South Wales Police Force who could deal with these issues other than you?" counsel assisting Jeremy Gormly SC said.

"That's the case … that's the protocols" Graeme replied.
Siege van out of action since 2011

The inquest has previously heard a purpose built van once used by NSW Police Negotiators has been out of action since 2011 due to storm damage.

The siege negotiators had to work from a small temporary office in a leagues club near the Lindt cafe where gunman Man Haron Monis took 18 people hostage.

Today, Mr Gormly asked Graeme if it was the case that the unit does not get enough support.

"No I think we do what we can with the available resources" he replied.

"There's only you, the truck in the garage ... and Reg?," Mr Gormly asked.

"Do you think that's enough?"

The inquest also heard the police negotiators worked without laptops and computers for most of the siege.

Graeme said he was not aware that several people, including lawyers who had previous dealings with Monis, Sydney's Grand Mufti, and freed Guantanamo Bay detainee Mamdouh Habib, had offered to help by talking to the gunman during the siege.

After Monis shot cafe manager Tori Johnson dead police stormed the building and killed the gunman.

Hostage Katrina Dawson died after being hit by police shrapnel.

We've got like five people that manage all the hostage situations in NSW.

I have a brother in law who used to have frequent mental episodes before he was court-ordered to take his meds and usually the cops don't need much of an excuse to put someone in the looney bin. Problem is, it's only for a couple of days and they usually don't have any long-term treatment plan in place until they go to court and get - I think it's called a community order, can't remember. But basically told to take their drugs. And with some mental disorders even that doesn't help, Peter Hore aka Shock has been in and out of the courts and mental hospitals for literally decades and I still have to get security to kick him out of the Uni library from time to time.

It was never put to the vote, and remains the greatest crime in the history of our nation.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has confirmed he has directed the Liberal Party to preference the Greens last, or behind Labor, in every seat across the country, arguing it is in the national interest.

Mr Turnbull said he had consulted widely before making today's announcement, but that it was ultimately his call.

"This is a decision I've made in the national interest," he said.

"The big risk in this election is that we would end up with an unstable, chaotic, Labor-Greens minority Government as we've seen before."

The Liberal Party's Victorian state president Michael Kroger had floated the idea of a preference deal with the Greens to unseat Labor in seats like Batman and Wills.

But Mr Turnbull has intervened to ensure that does not happen.

"I am the party's leader and this decision has been taken by me, with the federal director, Mr Nutt," he said.

"The decision has been under consideration for some time, there have been many discussions about it, a lot of consultation with the state divisions and with colleagues."

However, Mr Turnbull would not say where the Liberals would preference the Nick Xenophon Team which is posing a threat to his party in South Australia.

With pre-poll voting starting on Tuesday, parties are starting to reveal preference deals and how they will direct Australians to vote on July 2.
