The first one was fun as hell, and I've been looking forward to this since the teaser (titan swords, eh?). I think the fear is simply market oversaturation and the audience going for the more established franchises instead. I'd personally love to see it pushed back until March. That seems to have been removed when they changed the campaign so you could drop in at any point, which is a bummer but hey, the campaign is more accessible. That's a shame. I was glad to see people still get angry about Nuclear Eject.  This game is so drat fun. Might dip my toes into the co-op, but I'm just glad Attrition is still populated (though Hardpoint apparently isn't ).

This game's campaign is really great so far You can jump into Frontier Defense at any point, but you should finish the campaign simply due to it being pretty drat fun. Also, the campaign does introduce some characters from Frontier Defense technically. Everyone should play the campaign.

Remember also that EA has a stipulation that means Titanfall 3 will most likely be done in the Frostbite Engine so who knows what that will mean. Can't wait to punch through some walls with my titan.
