I used to have one in the 90s but it got broken in a power surge. Now I want to get one again Can you even still use them? I read somewhere that all the chatter is encrypted or digital or something so you can't listen in anymore

I have a scanner I got for weather alerts and poo poo. I think the last time I actually used it to listen to first responder frequencies was when we had massive flooding in 2010. Pretty boring around here otherwise.

You can get alerts on your phone now anyway so you don't even need it. But when I bought it smart phones were just starting to be a thing.
