If you would like to, you can play around on General Fanager's expansion tool. Decent way to guess who will be unprotected, what the expansion team might look like, etc. It's set up to automatically protect players who have to be protected because of NMC so you don't even need to worry about that.

http://www.generalfanager.com/teams/expansion

Edit: Las Vegas will be bad, but it looks like they'll be able to ice a roster that's at least sort of competitive, there will likely be some pretty decent players and prospects left unprotected.

For example: one of Vatanen, Fowler, or Lindholm will be unprotected assuming the Ducks can't find a way to jettison Bieksa

goodbye afternoon

also this is making me realize I don't know much about most of the players on most teams

I lied about the Ducks, I forgot you can choose to protect 8 skaters total instead of 7 forwards, 3 defense. However, that means if the Ducks protect all three of Lindholm, Vatanen, and Fowler (plus Bieksa), they can only protect 1 more forward since Perry, Getzlaf, and Kesler all have NMC. So they'd lose a good young player like Silfverberg, Rakell, or Pirri.

There are a few other teams in similar positions due to the NMC they've got like Chicago, Columbus, Minnesota, and Pittsburgh.

Oh, definitely. I could easily imagine the Ducks giving up Bieksa and a first, and retaining some salary, just to get him off their team.

Yeah. I'm hoping Vegas takes McQuaid or Hayes off of Boston's hand but I'm pretty sure they're going to take Subban or Colin Miller.

I mean, they have to expose Gruby and he seems like the most likely to be picked up due to his high backup talent level, most people view him as being able to be a starter, and cheap contract. At least as a backup to some veteran another team exposes that could possibly become their starter. Other than that, I could see the exposed 4th d-man of Orlov or Alzner getting picked up. Not to sure Vegas would bother with even trying to pick a forward from us.

Grubauer might get taken because Vegas' GM used to be the GM of the Caps so he's familiar with him, but I think they'll get their two goalies elsewhere. Guys like MAF, Halak, Mason or Neuvirth, maybe Bishop, might be unprotected, and I think they might go for a young, highly regarded prospect with their other pick. I think they're taking Subban from Boston, personally.

I thought the consensus is that Anaheim is going to lose one of Rakell, Silfverberg, or Fowler unless they make a move. They can't protect everyone due to bad NMCs (lol Bieksa). But it looks like you have Las Vegas taking Megna?

Yeah, I said it in the other thread but the NFL and the NHL don't really directly compete for viewers/attendees. NFL games are once a week, usually during the day, and NHL games vary. It'd be a different story if Vegas was getting a MLB or NBA team, but I think the Raiders and the Knights should be able to coexist pretty easily.

This has probably been discussed, but what are the Golden Knights (Knights?) doing for an AHL team? Is another AHL-ready market going to get a team or are they sprinkling players around the league?

I believe the two options they've discussed are loaning their AHL players to other AHL clubs that are nearby or an ECHL partnership. Eventually the AHL will expand. It doesn't cost half a billion dollars (only a paltry 5 million I wanna say) but they also need to find a market for them or build a stadium or something.

Edit: here's an article from a few months about it if you're interested: http://thehockeywriters.com/vegas-golden-knights-goal-to-name-ahl-affiliate-this-month/

Apparently my information is all wrong, they might be affiliated with the Chicago Wolves:

quote:

Today the Wolves are in the final year of a three-year affiliation with the St. Louis Blues. They’ve had relationships with several NHL clubs since joining the AHL in 2001. Chicago was linked to the Atlanta Thrashers for 10 years, through the 2010-11 season. A two-year deal with the Vancouver Canucks followed. Regardless of what transpires with Vegas, it looks as if the Wolves three-year deal with St. Louis will be coming to an end. In November of last year it was reported that the Blues would not be continuing their relationship with Chicago, instead opting to do business with a new expansion franchise located in Missouri. Such a development, should it come to fruition, would of course make things easier for Vegas to finalize and agreement with the Wolves to be its top minor league club.

Icing a team of KHL players + good prospects actually doesn't seem like that bad of an idea. Get Radulov to sign with you, see if you can get New Jersey to do the Kovalchuk sign and trade or whatever. Maybe take a chance on some other KHLers that never really got a chance their first try at the NHL (Khoklachev with Boston comes to mind).

Chicago has used Rockford as long as I can remember. So maybe like 20 years ago? The Wolves were Atlanta's AHL affiliate until the Thrashers relocated, then Vancouver's (because Winnipeg stole theirs), then St. Louis, and now Vegas.

Not a bad roster overall honestly. Lacking forwards but there's a lot of potential. MAF and the backups could be decent. I think they're gonna flip a few defensemen too.
