Don't touch shoopuf. Tailss will be shlapping!
Problem description: At any moment, after any period of playtime, sometimes my computer will just completely shut down for about five seconds before rebooting itself. It started when I installed WildStar (so I uninstalled it), then continued happening while playing FFXIV, but has also occurred while playing Subnautica, and one other game that I don't remember right now. There is no indication that anything is wrong when this happens: the screens turns black for a brief moment, the tower turns off, then turns itself back on as if it were a power flicker.

Attempted fixes: Googling suggested that it might be caused by Dx 11 and Nvidia not playing well together. Updating my drivers did not work, and I'm inept enough that trying to downgrade them sounds like I'll break something worse. Changing my main game back to Dx 9 seemed to make the problem go away for a long time. After playing Subnautica, it just returned in a very unpleasant surprise and now even seems to show up in FFXIV while on Dx 9, although perhaps before that I was just really lucky. While I do have two monitors and in my google runs it has been suggested to possibly be a problem with refresh rates/monitor/driver interaction, my "main" monitor is too poorly colored and fuzzy for the amount of motion that goes on in games; instead, I attempted to enable Vsync (and then triple buffering) within the Nvidia control panel. This had the side-effect of FFXIV mysteriously locking the framerate to 30fps despite being set to 1/1 refresh on a 60hz monitor while in bordered windows mode (fullscreen refuses to work on the secondary monitor), despite the fact that it would go 60+ if unlocked entirely.

Recent changes: What seemed to have triggered it was installing WildStar in February/March (don't remember exactly) and it has since then followed me to other games. No sorts of system spec changes or installs aside from games or driver updates.

Operating system: Windows 7 Home Ed. 64x

System specs: Unfortunately for all of us, I bought this off of a coworker who built the whole thing himself and I don't know each individual part. FFXIV has a built-in information reader in case of technical issues, so I'll be taking that. If more information is necessary, I can absolutely look up each individual part that is not included in this.

The usual place to look for this kind of issue is at your power supply. What brand is it and how old is it?

Don't touch shoopuf. Tailss will be shlapping!
It's a Corsair GS700. This thing. It would be at least two years old, although I don't know exactly when the computer was put together.

And the other side of it, for good measure:

... while taking that first picture, however, uh... This wouldn't have anything to do with it, would it? It slots back in perfectly fine and holds there but I noticed it wiggling when I was getting the sides off. The guy mentioned it when I bought it off him, but it's never been a problem before.

Now if only uploading to imgur didn't take forever and slow my entire network to a crawl. :suicide:

That power supply is 4-5 years old in addition to being broken, replace it and see if that fixes your issues.

In that case, I'll look into getting a better one. If the problem persists, I can return to this post, correct? Thanks for the quick advice regardless!

The Great Twist
I had the same problem with FF XIV DX 11, with a GTX 970. It eventually followed me into DX9 and the occasional other game. It turns out the card would poo poo the bed at 70 degrees or so, which I didn't think was dangerously high for a video card. The stupid piece of poo poo also capped its fan speed at 20% which is the reason the temp got that high to begin with.

I started using MSI afterburner to actually let the fan spin. Temperatures dropped dramatically and I've been 100% stable in game for months now.

If it's related to the same issue.
