I would like to get the equipment to do things like this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6tEHkh72T2E

As for what I'm working with now, I play 15 instruments, I know theory up down left and right. I've got a decent laptop, an electric guitar with a Vypyr VIP 2 modeling amp, and a dozen acoustic instruments (all the major winds, most of the major strings).

I've done a lot of work in adobe audition and fruityloops. As it is, though, outside of playing electric guitar in a bunch of bands, my knowledge of electronic music is pretty low, and I always had someone else setting levels and stuff like that for performances.

What other equipment and programs would I need to replicate something like the above recording, live? I need a microphone, some sort of pedal system from the above video, and maybe a speaker. The VIP 2 isn't great using the line-in feature. It feeds back a lot, and it won't work at all unless something is plugged into the main cable outlet. What would you guys recommend as a good set of starting off equipment?

Do you mean like which specific looper pedal you should get? Because all that dude is doing is using a midi controller to trigger samples which is like a pre-recorded way to do this:

If you want something fully featured there are various loopstation whateverthefucks that have a bunch of deep functionality. If you want something to play around with and already have an iphone or ipad, check out Loopy HD.

You can even hook it into a MIDI foot controller if you want handsfree, IIRC. If you want something roadworthy and simple as gently caress, the Line 6 DL4 is a lot of people's go-to. You'll see those on the road with Reggie Watts, Andrew Bird, and TuneYards just for starters.

The DL4 is great but "roadworthy" is not a word I'd use to describe it. Its a legendary failer.

Really? Never had an issue with mine. Maybe mine is just special.

Yeah, the build quality kind of sucks. I went through three of them in a couple years, then again I tended to use the one-shot and reverse buttons a lot to manipulate loops. Cool pedal but built like poo poo.

The problem is that the switch hits a button directly on the pcb which over time is a recipie for failure.

Is there a mod for this? I don't understand how Thomas Erak and Dave Knudson tour with them when they are notoriously $300 pieces of garbage. I've always wanted (a functional road-ready) one.

You can add normal button switches and wire in jumper wires I believe, I had 2 of them at one point when I wanted to pretend I was Dave Knudson and I looked into doing all that and just said gently caress it and sold them instead

Brian Chippendale uses them in Black Pus and it seems like the retrigger function is super cool. Someone needs to just come out with a similar pedal that has an exp jack for that function exclusively so you can abuse it and just ruin a controller and not the whole unit.

Some manufatcturer in general needs to go back to the idea of "looper as sound manipulation device" as a lot of the original early ones were as opposed to "looper as backing track" which is the modern thing.
