one of my profs was a retired nasa software engineer who would fail your submissions if you had enough spelling/grammar/punctuation errors in your code's documentation even if it worked flawlessly

I thought he was a colossal dick but he beat some good habits into us that I now appreciate

thanks, prof

In my current job I have the title Telecom Operation Engineer even though I only qualify for Technician if you look at my formal education. I like to say that Engineering is the new Technician in mobile and broadcasting services.

They're insecure about their degrees for some reason even tho engineering is lovely and has poo poo pay compared to software.

the first software firm that i worked for was literally named "Software Engineering Technology", run by that same CS department head i mentioned earlier who didn't have a PE certificate and I don't think any of the supervisors did either and they contracted with the DoD. now that i think about it it's kinda surprising they never got busted

AFAIK you can call yourself a [something] engineer and be fine, you just can't call yourself a regular engineer without a PE certificate.

Otherwise they would've busted every train engineer a long time ago.

i see this kind of poo poo all the time with scientists and nerds (check out the graphic design of an average scientific conference poster sometime) and it repeatedly confirms that you should have to pass a test to be allowed to produce publicly viewable presentation materials

that stuff is all bike shedding in the mind of an engineer.

yeah railroad engineers definitely don't have any kinda licensure or certification or anything you can just call yourself one no prob

Nowhere did I say that railroad engineers don't have to undergo any training.

But whatever. Y'all wanna get butthurt over a programmer calling themselves a software engineer, fine. Like, it'd be one thing if people expected software engineers to be able to design a dam or whatever, or if software engineers were trying to pass themselves off as PE certified, but no one is doing that.

or responsibility for what they program, that's always seemed like one of the biggest part of actual engineering is that your name is on it, people could die, you have a responsibility to engineer a solution that is safe and effective
