I don't think it's going to perform well in Eastern Europe either, which the second biggest foreign market for Hollywood after China according to some estimates. Currently, even though it's not even out the region, the film holds a score of 2.8 on kinopoisk (basically Russian IMDB). https://www.kinopoisk.ru/film/425673 Speaking of Eastern Europe and films with an all-female cast, there's a pretty good Russian film about women soldiers in WWI called Battalion. In Angry Birds they basically bomb a country and overthrow its government. You can't make a children's cartoon without a heavy doze of American politics nowadays.

Y-Hat posted:people saw angry birds? Well, yeah, 337.7 million USD in box office. I've watched all of it for free, however. It's a really bad cartoon full of inappropriate jokes about pregnant women and thinly veiled xenophobia. Like, I'm far from being a superwoke turbolefty who would over-analyse children's cartoons, but it's really, really hard not to read it that way. The writer for it used to work on Simpsons, too, so it's not a big reach to see him simply testing what he would get away with, but no one at Rovio or whoever was responsible for approving the script picked up on obvious parallels due to being extremely Finnish. I don't know. The point is it's a really bad cartoon.

Dapper_Swindler posted:wasnt that movie not even that bad. yeah it was a dumb kids movie and both the retard right and the retard left saw aniti muslim/anti immigration poo poo in it. It's really bad and unfunny. I belong to neither of these two groups, but the lesson of the movie is really clear: don't trust foreigners - they are after your eggs. It's not something allegedly hidden behind levels and levels of abstraction, it's literally the entire premise. Hope no one minds spoilers for Angry Birds, but basically one bird is constantly angry which is frowned upon in the birds society. When the pigs arrive, they 'accidentally' destroy the angry bird's house, and claim that they come in peace. They pretend that they want to enrich birds' culture by setting up shows and fireworks displays, but the angry bird doesn't trust them and finds out that the pigs underreported their numbers, and that the real reason they want to be accepted by the birds is that they want to steal all their eggs. No one believes the angry bird until the eggs are stolen, at which point the birds travel to the pig country, destroy its capital and bring the eggs back. Yeah, not specifically about Iraq or whatever, but the lesson and the main thrust of the story is that sometimes people need an angry bird who tells it how it is about those drat foreign terrists. There's trying to find racism in LotR because all orcs are bad, which requires a slightly damaged brain, and there's seeing a very clearly communicated message of Angry Birds: The Movie. The game is fine, though.

I'm pretty sure it's relatively big in Russian speaking countries. They even showed all the cartoons and stuff. By the way, saw a Russian TV ad for the movie, and it was suspiciously light on showing female leads. Maybe 50% of it was dedicated to Kevin.

Microwaves Mom posted:Also I have to say Disney has really avoided the remakes that hollywood does. THat's a surprise. They are making movie sequels/prequels/remakes to their cartoons instead. Oz the Great and Powerful, Maleficent, Alice in Wonderland, Cinderella, The Jungle Book. I'm pretty sure that at least half of those aren't very good. Also, their Pirates of the Caribbean franchise already has at least two sequels too many. Maybe more, because I'm not sure how many are there at this point. Oh, and Lone Ranger, of course, was a masterfully done remake of some stupid show from the 50s, lol.

Pvt.Scott posted:Reboot Willow. Have generic techno-metal blasting and those speed-up-slow-down bits during the entirety of every fight. Throw in as much swearing as PG-13 will let you get away with. (I think that's one gently caress, a couple shits, a few damns and probably handful of dicks.) Make all of the supernatural elements clearly the result of sleight-of-hand and stage magic and doggedly point out that the queen is an illegitimate ruler so we can hopefully squeeze this one into China with minimal effort. Oh yeah, instead of played out hobbits or whatever, the heroes are just a couple bland white actors with fake accents. Sorcia needs gigantic tits and no speaking parts. Warwick Davis will play a random homeless man who dies without speaking a single line.
