Internet Kraken posted:Who is the villain of this TI gonna be China is almost always thrust in the villain role because of their cultural insularity. That exists both nationally, because there's few interviews, no memes, no Chinese players hanging out in Twitch chat or shitposting on Twitter; but also a lot in their gaming scene. Their scene is the same fifty guys playing musical chairs, though it's rapidly shrunk to about 30 guys at this rate. Wings is great because they're loving weird and aside from Iceice's brief stint supporting in BigGod nobody's really heard of them before this year. Prediction based on what I genuinely think is going to happen, not based on my own biases: 1. LGD, 2. OG, 3. Liquid, 4. Navi, 5. Newbee Prediction based on my personal fan biases that I troll you all with: 1. Liquid, 2. LGD, 3. Navi, 4. EG, 5. Wings. (OG = LOL, Secret = somewhere underneath DC) I would really, really like a Liquid championship, for a bunch of reasons ranging from "Mutumbaman rules" to wanting the run of no repeat orgs/players to continue.

The new "Spaceballs taken seriously" trilogy of Star Wars villains are probably a better fit since their leader is 90 feet tall and rarely makes public appearances.

For only ~$600, you can play this game with Team Secret. Whoever the gently caress "Team Secret" is going to be in a few weeks is yet to be determined pending kicks.

This feels like the first group stage where anybody can beat anybody, except maybe Escape. Wings had a rough first go but then took a game from OG who have the DK/Secret "unstoppable fan favorite" thing going on.Internet Kraken posted:Is Dendi the only original Navi member left on the team? Navi was originally XBOCT and some Russian guys. Dendi and Artstyle came from DTS, which was v1lat's old team; and Puppey came from I don't remember because his history pre-TI1 is a whole lot of friendstacks with names like "Bob's Big Dick Buddies."

The Glumslinger posted:So I really don't watch much dota, but there seem to be a lot more early team fights than in previous years? Is that the direction of the current meta, or am I just happening to find aggressive games? Killing AI things = less gold Killing players = more gold Basically they aren't going to get rid of stacking, even if it's an illogical Warcraft 3 anachronism, but they're going to make it a lot less important. Last year's games had a lot of enormous ancient stacks and teams fighting over them and trying to catch each other farming them. Now, gently caress that. Don't farm dinosaurs and dragons, farm other people.

Nanomashoes posted:I'm complaining. Laning is fun. It seems to me they wanted to be able to reduce the dependency on the comeback mechanic (because pros hated it) while also controlling the snowball stomp nature (because viewers hated it.) So rather than a winning team getting a huge farm advantage killing trolls and dragons, and the losing team getting back into it by hunting the richest bounty, you go for more straight up manfights. They've retracted a bit. Winning teams usually have more kills than the 1.5x-2x (with 2x being a typical pub loss) they used to, but they aren't in the 3x range like they were in 6.86. Announcers are having to point out more and more often that the kills count doesn't necessarily indicate who is winning.

Pureauthor posted:EE is consistently a regular International and Majors participant. Secret was on the cusp of losing their perpetual string of invites at Shanghai, and then as luck would have it they not only did respectably but they won the whole frigging thing. Which gave them more invites to tournaments they performed poorly at. Their past year has been an exercise of how many qualifiers can you skip by sliding along in past results and popularity. There's a good argument to be made that placing second at Frankfurt and first on Shanghai actually hurt them because they almost never played online for any stakes all the way from Frankfurt to TI, getting beaten by teams that had to earn their trip to LAN. Some of it is probably due to the prestige of Valve-sponsored tournaments. Placing second at a Major seems to mean more in people's minds than placing second at Epicenter or an ESL event.

Envy chokes from time to time but it's not like good players can't compensate for them. It's having him and rtz together on one team makes every game a struggle. Both guys are less amazing than they were when they were on Secret without the other. Who knows why.
