I don't like removing characters- I'd rather gradually adjust them until they're good. SA's adjustment of Amy Rose is probably an OK example of that, in that the character is at least a little better. Boom's treatment of the same character shows the end result. Dark Brotherhood is like the only exception.

it's weird to me that there weren't more indie sonic-likes made. you got like a billion nes style platformers and metroidvanias but the only complete sonic-like game i can think of is freedom planet.

The game's engine is tricky to copy, the design required is really demanding, and the fanbase is completely intolerable. A very small number of people have been able to completely finish a sonic-esque game project, be it a fangame or a commercial product, and not have it get torn to shreds. Almost the entirety of that list of people are now working on Sonic Mania.

The only thing I know about Mammoth Mogul from second-hand info is that he's immortal and at some point had the realization that he's immortal and Sonic the Hedgehog isn't so there's no reason he can't just wait until Sonic dies of old age and THEN take over the world.

Which, to be fair, is a pretty good super-villain plan.

That's from after the new writing crew took over, and another example of why I have (weird, detached) sour grapes about them having to reboot everything.

If Christian Whitehead represents the best of the Sonic fanbase, Ken Penders represents the worst. On what leg can he or his demented followers possibly stand on now that the comic went through a major reboot?

Ken Penders has, afaik, absolutely zero fans. The whole thing is just to maintain the IP grab and try to extort money from Archie/Sega.

I don't get it.

That's the fun part- I apparently massively miscalculated and it requires much too much obscure knowledge of both franchises, so it doesn't work for either audience! :smith:

Megaman has its own lengthy history of conflict over the names of characters. Names in the classic series were all styled "Thing Man". The X series started getting weird, starting with a convention of "Thing" + "Animal name". This hit its peak with a game where the translators renamed all the bosses to be references to Guns'n'Roses. Independently, Mega Man X1 had a boss named "Boomer Kuwanger" who is actually some sort of beetle, a fact that confused everyone back in the day-weird translation again. What kind of animal is a "Kuwanger"? Later series, like the one from which the robot in the image come from, are more and more incomprehensible. The robot pictured spits and creates eggs as its attacks. Its actual name is "Popla Cocapetri", which sounds like a kind of food-borne illness.

Also it let me write "robowang".

I guess what I'm saying is however bad sonic fans have it, don't forget what Mega Man fans deal with.

I'm OK with lives systems- I generally see criticism of their atavistic nature as being overstated. So long as they don't hit the frustration "sweet spot", I think lives still have a negative motivational role that's beneficial even if they're superficial in practice.

Granted I only had the Wii version, my problem with the Werehog was more about the quantity than the quality. If they could tweak the gameplay, I still think it could be a fun Knuckles thing. Of course, ultimately, I don't know why they don't just make everyone do action stages. That was my frustration with SA1 and SA2. Sonic has the best stages. Make everyone do that! And of course, the characters most people like after Sonic are Tails and Gamma. Because they have action stages with lil twists. And nobody likes Big or Rouge because they're so far from Sonic that it's maddening.

LEGO's writing game is top notch. I've got a thing for 100%ing their games on steam, and the DC lego games have become progressively and simultaneously more in-depth, nerdy, and horribly self-aware. The latest batman one lets you unlock Kevin Smith (voiced by Kevin Smith) by beating missions where you direct bad superhero extended universe movies. You can also unlock Zebra Batman and Frank Miller Batman (who is much larger than the other Batmans and can't do anything but smash things).
