I can't decide whether or not Sony would make their own console in this what if scenario, though I'm leaning toward them becoming a manufacturer of other companies consoles for a while, like how the 3DO worked with Panasonic and Goldstar. The other question is who would make the jump to a disc only based console first? My bet is Sega wanting to get there before Nintendo.

I have nothing to back this up really, just pure speculation.

Oh poo poo I've been meaning to ask about which Hamtaro games are the good ones. I just played through Ham-Ham Heart Break and it was a good game especially if you don't mine cute, slightly simple, and short. Actually wan't expecting it to be like an old school adventure game (down to having a menu of action words even!), it was a very pleasant surprise. Which other ones in the series are like that as opposed to dumb mini game collections? I remember passing up one on GBA at a shop because it was mini game oriented. It probably was that Ham Ham Games one.

Huh good to know. I'll have to keep an eye out for the GBC Hamtaro after I finish my current collection weed out spree. And before anybody gets any hopes up no it isn't any worthwhile games, those were snapped up by a friend of mine.

And yeah if I had to start over collecting today I would definitely flash cart it all or even stick to emulators, and I don't even have any of super rare games or expensive popular games like Conker's Bad Fur Day. I think Casino Kid 2, God Hand, and Splatterhouse 3 might be the "top tier" of my collection, and none of them are over $100.

I just axed Final Fantasy Tactics A2 and though not an RPG all my Warioland games from the collection because even though they are good games and loved by many they didn't click with me for whatever reason. They just didn't give me that gut feeling of wanting to play more of them.

High five for overdoing schooling. I'm taking a break from a ten page assignment on the geography of east Asia at the moment. It's part of a self-paced course that I have to do as much of as possible before my proper classes start on Monday and for the past week I've been writing about one of those a day. When classes hit on Monday I'll technically be enrolled in 19 credit hours including that course with nice long labs five days a week.

Oh yeah, I know the feeling. Doing an accelerated program night school with classes from 4 to 10 pm straight, and most of it is lab time in the shop as well. Only 15 credit hours but when its condensed so it leaves little time for other things.

Speaking of Repro carts, whose the go to for that these days? I keep toying with the idea of getting a Gun Nac cart. It's getting hard to find that one in general, never mind the price.

I know flash carts make more sense at this point, but I think its the shelf candy/ regret of not getting it cheap years ago when I had the chance thats eating me. Technically a repro wouldn't fill that void very well either since its not a "real" one.

Sort of related, is anybody big into homebrews/hacks/etc? The only one I've ever bothered to shell out for was Water Margin: The Tales of Clouds and Winds on Genesis and I haven't even had the time to play it. I've considered many others before like Halo 2600 or one of the passable Pokemon hacks, but none of those are a clear ripoff of best game ever Streets of Rage 2, which was the tipping point on Water Margin for me. :v: Most homebrews seem kinda eh in general?

Jesus I'm sorry I touched off a shitstorm. I considered a repro of Gun Nac as it's the cheapest short term option to have the game to shove into my NES, but definitely not the best long term option. Hell I am one of those cart loving freaks, I could buy a flashcart but I couldn't sell out the rest of my collection to do it (see my stack of NGPC games in addition to a flashcart). Plus I'm not sure I could handle the pressure of owning a $170 game. I'd be too afraid something would happen to it.

We're in this situation now for DS games. The point in which you can get good ds games sub $10 at gamestop is over now only the shovelware crap is left in store. And again they chucked the cases to save space. DS game cases are currently cheap on ebay, but I suspect that will rise eventually, especially as Dumpster diver/gamestop employees/savvy trade in people run out of a steady supply of them.

So cheapish components but nothing thats made me worry about holding up to normal use as of yet.

Anybody have any time to play a good game over the holiday weekend? I decided to finally start Legendary Starfy on DS as something short, quick and simple after finishing a disappointing RPG. And well, Starfy is also kinda disappointing. I'm two worlds in and Starfy doesn't seem to have a whole hell of a lot to offer game play wise. Maybe it's because you can swim just about anywhere on the screen rather than having to do traditional platforming and risk missing a jump. It'll be interesting to see if the difficulty ramps up at all by the end of the game. Guess I should have started with one of the GBA Starfy games, I've heard those are better. But on the other hand I don't find Starfy and his antics to be as cute or as full of personality as Kirby. It's really hard to not make that comparison though, perhaps I'm expecting too much of Starfy because Kirby is so good?

And Quarth is cool and good, I should play it instead of weeding out my Wii games. Madworld was far dumber than I expected especially after following it with No More Heroes. Both games have over the top violence but it's more purposeful/relevant in Heroes versus Madworld's tryhard edginess. The train of disappointing games continues for me, I'm up to twelve games to get rid of. Feels good to clean out at any rate.

Side question that has nothing to do with anything, what are the good games on Gameboy Color specifically? I've been going through my collection lately and noticed that I have very few GBC games, roughly 8 or so, if I do not include black cart Gameboy games. Is this why GBC is lumped in with regular old GB? I'm having trouble thinking of a smash hit clear cart GBC game that isn't Pokemon Crystal.

Pretty much that. There's a difference in jumping from an analog record to a digital CD. An NES game was digital to start with so there is little difference between playing the game on an original cart, everdrive, emulator, what have you. The game program remains the same. Even game companies themselves re release their back catalog on to different formats. This is how I own four copies of Sonic 1 over three systems without even trying. There still are NES carts made as either reproductions, bootlegs, or the occasional homebrew but its pretty niche outside of bootleggers looking to make a buck on fake games.

The first game is a good intro to what it's all about -- no bells and whistles. I don't know where you heard the GBC one was "best" -- it's great for GBC, but the PS1/DC versions are obviously better ports of the original.

2 is fairly similar so that's not a bad choice either.

After that is when the significant differences kick in. People will probably talk up Drill Land to the high heavens, and it is great, but I don't think it's a good intro for a first-timer since the modes are so distinct and break convention.

I didn't quite "get" Mr. Driller when it first came out, but eventually I went back to it and appreciated it more. You really do have to think strategically, and on your feet, and I don't think it ever communicated that well, but patience pays off.

Thanks, I'll take the plunge on getting a PS1 copy. At least this confirms that I'm not totally nuts for thinking that the DS port (remake?) is not nice to beginners. Perhaps I confused GBC with GBA in terms of which was best? Oh well.

And that Pi Gameboy is totally rad, and probably one of the best form factors you could have for a portable emulator box. Its hard to beat a classic design, though the GBC is probably my favorite game boy shape, if that makes any sense.
