Can anyone else think of any examples of a video game where it could basically be considered a "take your money and run" scam other than "Plumber's Don't Wear Ties"? I swear if I were an attorney general I would have went after them for what is essentially a scam (or at the very least, false advertising). It would be like if Universal put out Jurassic Park on VHS but it was just text from the book scrolling the entire tape. It's the only time I would think you'd actually be able to file a class-action lawsuit against a video game for outright fraud. Any other examples of this other than "Star Citizen lol" and "anything LJN made"? I mean yeah there are a lot of lovely games but that one was clearly "haha we got you rear end in a top hat, thanks for the money" and I was wondering if it had ever been done before or since.

Ninjabread Man / Trixie in Toyland / I'm pretty sure there's a _third_ all for the Wii are all the exact same game reskinned with no indication as such come to mind as feeling incredibly scammy.

Nah, I agree with you. The most frustrating thing about Castlevania's design to me is that it demands the average player memorize the location of and rely heavily on subweapons because of your ridiculous movement limitations. Seeing people beat that game with whip only are like wizards to me because gently caress if I can do anything without getting holy water and praying nothing else drops. How old school Castlevania survived so long without some ability to ignore dropped subweapons or bank them is beyond me. No, I don't want to accidentally run into a dagger and have my precious cross fly off the edge of a platform you dicks. Even Contra offered that.

Finding out the game had a save system since it was an FDS release originally blew my mind

Like a year ago the Game Grumps played the multiplayer courses for Kirby's Dream Course and lamented that there were only four courses to choose from. Fans took it to heart and dug up a course editing tool and have put together a romhack with over 150 holes.

Reddit thread with a link to the patch: https://www.reddit.com/r/KDCGameGrumps/comments/50kndy/grumps_dream_course_10_is_here_get_the_patch/

It uses the Japanese rom as the base. So now, ironically I have to dig up a copy of that despite my cartridge of the game being the Japanese release.

Well why don't NES carts still get produced? Do we need some movement to say those games are ~warmer~?

Seriously though, that's a simple point I didn't think of.

Lack of demand for it to be worthwhile.

http://wisdomtreegames.com/store.html Wisdom Tree sells their old Christain games as new carts so it's not a completely dead scene. I know there was a successful NES game kickstarter a year or two back whose name escapes me that was also getting a physical release for backers.

I'd guess with vinyl it's an outdated niche format, but it's _the_ outdated niche format compared to "I want my game on an old console" meaning you have a dozen choices. If you want to get into vinyl you need one record player and you can play whatever. If you want to get into old games you're going to need a good six or so consoles to cover the mainstream systems only.

The trick is that you don't actually need RGB. It's absolutely a nicer cleaner picture, and I'd love to be able to afford modding all my consoles and getting a Frameister, but a component PS2, s-video SNES, or just a plain old composite NES is still perfectly enjoyable.

I tried this and I gotta say I feel like it's meant for an advanced player. A semi-casual like me was completely lost and killed all the time even in the beginning (and I didn't even get far enough for it to get really hard?) I had no idea where to go, every area looked the same and all I could do was pick up a few missiles. I tried to look for bombs to no avail and felt like I had been everywhere I could. It didn't really feel like it rewards exploration in the sense that classic Metroids did, it's more of an exercise in frustration.

I had the same issues early on. I think printing out the map and marking off dead ends with what item you'd need would probably help a lot. I stuck with it for a bit (you get high jump boots before bombs), and once you get an e-tank you become much less vulnerable. I'm not sure if I'm going to bother going back to it though. It's very difficult to tell where you should be going next or if you've completely explored a section.

Super Metroid does a nicer job of letting the player know they can't proceed down a branch early on, with Rogue Dawn it seems like you explore a dozen map tiles before being sure you're supposed to have the ice beam or something.

Can you point me to the right direction for the hi-jump boots (this is assuming I can get it with just missiles) using that map so I could at least try to work my way a bit further?

I believe it was in the water area you can get to. There's a passage that I thought you needed bombs for, but you just shoot a block from a lower part of the screen. Other than that I already forget everything, whoops

I love that one that goes in the top slot and want it to be real so somebody can stack many more Sonic & Knuckles carts in it.

Is there a good either video or article out there that goes into what the Sega Genesis could do technically and the sort of things developers came up with to get around its limitations?

I just got done watching this neat demo video

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OeGdJk5zb6c

and realize that while I know a reasonable amount of stuff about NES/SNES hardware, I basically don't know a thing about the Genesis.

Ideally something like the ultimate game boy talk is what I'm looking for.

Five is so much fun and probably my favorite RPG. The Four Job Fiesta event is going on now if you wanted to try that https://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3820741

I only played maybe halfway through it before trying a fiesta and it's generally not some huge challenge unless you attempt some of the weirder run categories.

I'm surprised Square said it was too difficult for why they didn't localize it originally, even without knowing specific ways to cheese bosses I think playing through with all the jobs open would make it incredibly easy just by having a white mage and something like knight or samurai for high damage. It also feels very fast paced storywise like a Saturday morning cartoon which I think would've been really appealing to kids in the SNES era.

This also breaks a lot of the monster infight function.

One other odd thing: SNES implemented Cyberdemon and Spiderdemon properly. Jag, 3do, 32x, GBA all miss it.

Wait, wait do they do for e2m8 and e3m8 where those enemies are the boss monsters?
