So it looks like this game is having a free trial/open beta things that runs until the end of the month. Is there enough game here to make it worth taking a look yet?

If you think Garriott plans to spend any time actually developing this project Ive got bad news for you. Hell continue to milk it and show up for the occasional presser but hes an "idea" guy, not a "does work" guy.

I think it's just a niche minority of 30 something year old weirdos with too much disposable income and not enough self esteem that keep funding these things. People were only semi joking when they called EQ an IRC client with good graphics, the social aspects of these games really was a big deal and showing off your sweet gear to demonstrate your status was definitely part of that. Each server being its own little community with heroes and villains and drama and dragons created an environment that was really different from what most people do with Facebook.

Considering Richard Garriotts ten digits wealth? Probably a lawyer. But of course the various NEETs who support this stuff in the hopes that it will provide them a virtual world to escape into have become so used to being used as doormats that theyll just pretend it didnt happen and move on to the next big thing. It kind of lowers my expectations for tears when Star Citizen finally implodes.

Who is playing WoW at this point is really interesting to me. I know a whole lot of people that played WoW, but absolutely no one that still plays it. Obviously there are still a whole lot of people playing but I cant figure out who they are. I wish there was some demographic information on the game's playerbase or something because Im really curious just who the 6,000,000+ people still playing are.

Yeah, when I played WoW definitely had a pretty broad reach. I suppose its just like it was when I played WoW, the people who play dont really play other games so they are kind on insular. That and the simple fact is there are more people that have played WoW than are playing at this point which is pretty insane when you consider how many subscribers the game has even now.

I kind of suspect Lum's not finding a lot of work as a B tier MMO database guy these days and took the job because work is work. God knows hes been through more than a few layoffs over the years. Which makes me feel bad that hes getting ragged on so hard for getting stuck on this dead end of a project. Its still kind of entertaining considering who he used to be.

I dont think its fair to fault Lum for not coming out and admitting the game is a piece of poo poo. You just cant do that to a company you are working for or have even worked for in the past. Itd be unprofessional. Lum is fine and its good to hear that hes doing fine. Still, the irony of him ending up on a project like this considering who he used to be is pretty funny and I bet he appreciates it even if he cant admit it.
