Ytlaya posted:Eh, "less countries with nukes = better" isn't some inherent truth. To take that idea to an extreme, it would be a bad thing if every country destroyed its nuclear weapons except for Russia. There's something to be said for a balance of power leading to stability. To be more specific then, if Iran had confirmed nuclear weapons, Israel would make its open-secret arsenal public and Saudi Arabia would also seek to acquire nuclear weapons. Egypt and Turkey would become nervous and likely seek out their own arsenals, and the balance of power in Africa would be heavily disrupted by a nuclear Egypt. Nuclear proliferation makes the balance of power less stable, not more, in addition to the simple fact of "the more nukes there are, the more likely they are to be used." The recognized nuclear powers of USA, Russia, UK, France, and China are all both part of the non-proliferation treaty and are countries with relatively stable governments. This is why India getting nukes was such a huge deal (not a NPT signatory), and PAKISTAN getting nukes was scary beyond the pale because it's a borderline failed state. This is why a nuclear Iran is a bad thing that shouldn't be allowed to happen. It has nothing to do with scary brown people and everything to do with non-proliferation and the balance of power in the Middle East/North Africa.
