I recently started a "throw in a bunch of mods and welcome to hell" playthrough of Skyrim and... oof. I had some thoughts!

Best mod of the game: Clockwork. Good poo poo end to end. Technically impressive, nothing ever broke for me, great atmosphere. Would recommend without reservation.

I recently played through Gray Cowl of Nocturnal as part of Lexy's Modlist... no disrespect to its creator, but goddamn it was not a pleasant experience. Started out decently, until it spits you out into the desert. Then just goes drastically downhill, and the end was just... I'm not doing that again. If I want the item I'll just console it in and pretend it was all a dream.

loving same, holy god. Although the beginning bothered me. The dungeon seemed to require a lot more walking to get anything done than was necessary, and one of the choices of Blades to be nostalgic about was completely inexplicable. Screw Baurus, says the modder, let's bring in the one guy who you never get dialog with, he just always says he's busy even if he's sitting around!

I did get a laugh out of the guy with the Italian(?) accent trying to do a stereotypical Middle-Eastern accent. I have never wanted to harm someone more in my life, though, when the NPC near the end started walking down a hall and into a large room and I realized... oh, I have to follow him across the room, too! I have never walked down so many pointless halls in my life as I did in that mod. By the end, I was begging for it to just end, not have me pointlessly walk through Akavir for no reason and oh yeah, escort quest NPC to the docks, why not, WHY, WHY DO THIS. I nearly cried with relief when I saw credits.

Credit where it's due, there is a specific daedric lord voiced VERY well. However, he's written so badly I skipped through as much of him as I could. And the flood of spiders coming out of the tomb walls effect was effective.

nine-gear crow posted:

Helgen Reborn's got a lot of charm to it that outweighs its negatives too, I find.

That one guy's voice actor and the fact that a lot of it wildly drags out way longer than it should sorta ruin it for me. You know the one. The one that sounds like a really aggressive Ahnold impersonation. And to be specific, the arena sequence is pointless and irritating and too long. Some of the dungeons are also too long. Far too little of the dialog is skippable because it's a scene between multiple people. Also the waifu is... weird. Like okay, you can marry one of the characters, fine, but it's weird how she goes out of her way to specifically introduce herself and point out that she's a follower, oh and she's wearing that tiny outfit Aela wears. Just weird.

Tools of Kagrenac was irritating. The final areas are excessively long walks with nothing much to do in them. The plot is basically "try to do this thing that you are told very clearly not to do by many people with no opportunity to do anything but follow along without just not continuing the quest." I wouldn't have been so mad in it if not for the deeply irritating maze ruin that includes a large underwater section full of slaughterfish who jammed me into a corner in a way that meant I couldn't move or do anything.

The Forgotten City was... a problem, frankly. The stuff from the standalone game they have coming up sounded much better, but let's just say there was some problematic poo poo in the mod. Homophobia that felt weird for the setting was one big thing. It's really clear it wasn't made for Skyrim's setting. But there's also a sideplot where a gay man is getting death threats from some other guy and you threaten him into stopping by saying you'll magically turn him into the gay guy's sex slave. And in the good ending, they end up in a romantic relationship. :yikes: The premise was also underutilized and underexplored, but I really checked out a bit after that sidequest.

Artifacts: Tournament of Ten Bloods is pretty short, combat-heavy. There are some difficult fights, but my only real problem was that the initial dragon was a LITTLE glitchy. He did not want to land anywhere near me for the end of the fight, so I ran all over the mountain a lot. Otherwise, short and sweet and kinda intense. Would recommend.

The Brotherhood of Old was... a confusing experience. On the one hand, it wasn't as bad as I expected. Pretty good Nazir and Babette voices. Night Mother's not bad either. A little weird that Cicero was left out altogether, but I guess he could easily be dead at that point. There were characters with "funny" quirks that weren't any worse than Cicero, much to my surprise. Those are usually the worst. But it also was just jerking off Lucien LaChance in a really weird-rear end way. There's some weird OC do not steal descendant of his who is a girl you can marry, but even that wasn't as bad as I expected. She even looked pretty much like a normal NPC. Also the plot was weird as hell, and I honestly think the mod would have been better off without it. It's even optional in the end and nobody is that bothered if you don't go through with it. Just deeply strange. And there were other deeply strange moments where you had opportunities to be merciful for some reason? Like yeah, choices, sure, but there's no consequences for not killing your target and that's weird. Or they'd just leave out a thing you could have said to solve something like... Okay, example: Guy wants brother saved from jail. Wants everyone else there killed for a bonus, no witnesses. There's a complication even he doesn't know about : Brother is in jail to get his girlfriend out. You somehow do not have the choice to go "We killed everyone except the person your brother got arrested to save. He threatened to try to kill us if we killed her, and I don't think you'd have wanted us to murder your brother while saving him." You just lie about it and say you killed them all or lie and say it was frantic and one person got away.

On the other hand, the modder needs a quest marker/explanation intervention. I have literally no idea why I killed the first target. I genuinely thought I missed something, went back, did it again, still could not figure it out at all. There is more than one place where I had no idea what the hell was even going on, and there were several spots that were begging for a quest marker. Like look, the sanctuary is a relatively big place and Babette wanders. You want me to talk to her? put a drat marker over her head. There was more than one spot where the quest should have at least updated to say what was going on, but it did not, so again, I SORTA wasn't sure what even just happened. There was a part that wanted you to follow an orc from loving Morthal to Markarth. Luckily, he mentioned where he was going so I could fast travel there and wait, but they REALLY should have just put a marker in Markarth and had me meet him there. (I say this, but meeting someone at a city also broke catastrophically for me) Then I had to walk all the way to a relatively nearby dungeon with him, all of this with basically no explanation.

The worst part is that it broke the living poo poo out of everything. The OC girl's hairstyle, an inoffensive ponytail, somehow gave her greyface no matter how facegen was done. One of the new NPCs started a riot in Markarth and killed every single guard there, and this wasn't intended. I hadn't even joined the Brotherhood yet. He's also visibly way out of place in Markarth, wearing daedric gauntlets and boots and a robe. I was told to meet two people in Morthal and only one showed up and had no dialog. I didn't know this was broken until later because I got sucked into a different quest before I could get there. Part of one of the goddamn SIDEquests in it breaks the literal main quest. Tried to kill a target in the Thalmor Embassy during the main quest there. Should work, right? SUPER WRONG, nobody involved in that main quest will spawn with it active. One of the sidequests caused, without warning, all Solitude guards to want to murder me on sight. The sidequest chain ended in the biggest meh I've ever seen. There are a myriad of nasty bugs and completely fragile sequences of events. They will not be fixed, because according to the modder, they are not the mod's fault, they are yours, so screw off, I guess.

Fun gem of the game: Blackreach Railroad. That end boss didn't path well at all and was a bit glitchy, but I thoroughly enjoyed every second of that mod anyway. I also am enjoying my train hat for train people, like myself.

Related, but the mod that adds Dwemer spectres is great. It integrates seamlessly and functions very well. I had a deeply weird moment in Finding Mercer's first dungeon, a Dwemer ruin, where the bedrooms and such were populated by normal spectres and tonal architects and such but there were guard spectres and robots in the hallways. The positioning seemed so intentional I checked to see if the mod used spectres specifically. It did not. It just worked that way.

Following Mercer is solid, by the way. It's just dungeony stuff, but the dungeons are nice! My favorite's this ice tunnel dungeon which had skeletons and stuff embedded in the walls, like one really giant skeleton you could only see bits of as the tunnel wound around. They integrate cleanly with the rest of the game, too. That first Dwemer ruin was pretty cool too, because there were places where the falmer and dwemer had clearly clashed. The ruin also seemed to have places that had purpose, like there were bedrooms and labs and pens and such.

I'm glad it helps somebody!

I kinda ended up doing it because all the reviews I was seeing of all of these mods were super glowing and void of ANY detail. They just kinda read like someone watched a trailer for a movie and reviewed it from that. There were also some reviews that just said to play the mod instead of a corresponding bit of official CC because it was automatically better. Sure, Tools of Kagrenac is free, but I bet the CC version doesn't have that goddamn underwater maze bit. And I'll wager the CC Gray Cowl doesn't make me walk, not run or jog, WALK the length of that entire cavern the skeletal dragon inhabits in that one Mage's Guild quest.

I wasn't wanting a step by step or anything, but "I had opinions about parts of the mod" didn't seem like a high bar to clear.

I think it might be due to an Ordinator perk I took, Hailstorm (supposed to give you a stacking Attack Speed increase every time you fully draw a bow)

edit: looked into a bit and apparently it might happen because sometimes having Windbourne (Speech Skill) and Hailstorm active at the same time can cause Quick Shot (a per-requisite to Hailstorm) to stop working right. Good news is Quick Shot is an unchanged Vanilla perk so turning it off and back on via console commands usually fixes it.

Oh yikes. Well, I'd say you've got four basic options. This is assuming that everything else is set up correctly, it's Program Files that is causing the problem, and Program Files is causing only this problem. Which... are not easy to take as givens.

1) Start over. Most obvious, least ideal.

2) Access fuckery. See if changing user access control or folder permissions or something will get Windows to let up. If you have an anti-virus program beyond Windows Defender, you can try disabling it for a moment. Worth a shot, can't make things worse.

3) Just go without it. Without FNIS, what will happen is that any mod which changes or adds animations will not work. But I don't think it will actually break the game or anything, you're just restricted to vanilla animations. So no dodge mod, no new idles, etc. Nothing in my guide that affects animations will work and you cannot add anything of your own. Try disabling mods that affect animation (you don't have to delete them, just uncheck on the list) first to be safe. Again, may not work but I can't see it making things worse so it's worth a shot if you're at a dead end and unwilling to start over.

4) Migrate Skyrim. This ain't gonna be easy, and it probably carries a high risk of imploding to the point you're stuck with option 1. I'm not sure I have the knowledge to advise on how to do it. I would imagine that to try you would uninstall the game, reinstall it, re-do the manual placement mods, then update MO2 on the proper locations and hope to god it works. If MO2 can't track that, maybe you have reinstall all the mods (but not re download, all the archives should still be there). I have never tried to do this, maybe someone else has some experience.

What about trying Nemesis? I haven't been through the guide yet, but from what I can tell, most mods Nexus-side have started at least putting in options for it. It seems extremely easy to go from one to the other.
