back when the wright brothers were working on gliders there were basically two schools of thought w/r/t how to go about making a plane the first school was guys who figured that you could just load up your plane with propellers and fans and poo poo without a lot of thought towards aerodynamics. they wanted to just plow through the air like the airplane was a big truck, and they were known as "chauffeurs". the second school was guys who thought it was more important to make carefully-balanced aerodynamic shapes and have a really good handle on maneuvering, pretty much to work with the principles of aerodynamics instead of trying to make them your bitch. the guys were called "airmen". anyways the wright brothers were airmen and it worked out pretty well for them, while the dude who drew that picture was a gigantic chauffeur fanboy.

SmokaDustbowl posted:there is a high chance they'll get thrown out by postal people debateable http://www.improbable.com/airchives/paperair/volume6/v6i4/postal-6-4.html quote:Wrapped brick. Wrapped in brown paper; posted in street corner box with same amount of postage as was strapped to unwrapped brick. Extreme weight for size made package seem suspicious. Notice of attempted delivery received, 16 days. Upon pickup at station, our mailing specialist received a plastic bag containing broken and pulverized remnants of brick. Inside was a small piece of paper with a number code on it. Our research indicates that this was some type of US Drug Enforcement Agency release slip. The clerk made our mailing specialist sign a form for receipt.

Roosevelt posted:it's good. you really get the sense that ww1 was 99% hiding in filthy, stinking, boring trenches all day long, hoping you don't get shelled or gassed, and trying not to get eaten by rats, and 1% charging into certain futile death. and the people in charge have no idea wtf to do about new technology, so they just pour humans into a grinder to see what works. having learned about it, it seems like ww1 was a way worse experience than 2, if there's even a comparison. check out WWI Medic, an older game from the guys who made dwarf fortress. good presentation re: the futility of static warfare.
