Is there another source for this? I Googled to check all the "what's coming to Netflix in February" clickbait articles, and none of them mention LU.

No source yet aside from MLW. But Melissa Santos said on a live broadcast recently that a Netflix deal was very close and should be finalized soon, and Van Wagenen also said last week that big announcements were coming soon and then "no commented" when they asked him if that meant Netflix, so this all lines up with what we've been hearing.

The MLW show also said that it may also reach some areas of South America as well as NA, and that while it'll start with the previous two seasons, it's a situation where they could keep adding more onto it like a lot of still-active TV shows do.

If that deal is inked, it's great news for Season 4 budgeting.

Yeah that sucks a lot. Every so often a network gets into playing chicken with a particular provider and they get pulled. If I remember right, I lost ScyFy for like four months right in the middle of watching some dumb miniseries on it when that poo poo happened with them.

The underlying source (the MMM Podcast) said his information is coming from a "very credible source" on the 2/15 date probably not happening -- the host often has DeJoseph or Van Wagenen on his podcast so odds are that it's one of them. He said "maybe that date happens but maybe it doesn't" meet that date (and probably not), but it really shouldn't be reported as news right now that it's going to hit that date.

He also said it's nothing to worry about, it's just a thing where all the episodes have to be properly dubbed and closed captioned (season 1 in two languages) and everything up to Netflix's specifications, and it's a lot of episodes to do that to, between the two seasons. And it hadn't made it on Netflix's coming soon list, either.

Van Wagenen on the MMM show podcast again:

Netflix: As that podcast reported previously from a "credible source" (likely him behind the scenes), there's no known hard date for when the Netflix episodes go up. The deal is done, and they expect that they'll deliver all the episodes to Netflix by the 15th, but there's a QC process that Netflix goes through and he doesn't know how long it will take. The 15th date was something that someone not at LU (i.e. MLM Radio) pulled out of thin air and then all the news reporting sites ran with it. The reason you haven't seen any official announcement from El Rey or LU is that they haven't been given a date from Netflix yet. He not privy to exactly where it it will be available, but he believes there are "multiple regions." The Spanish language versions of the Season 1 episodes will also be available on Netflix with the Hugo/Vampiro commentary. There isn't a deal yet for Season 3, but EVW thinks that's more from LU's side -- these things are typically delivered seasonally and he expects that they'll cut a deal for Season 3. He said that he also expects that it is going to do better audience-wise then Netflix thinks which could mean they could cut an even better deal for Season 3.

On the people leaving AAA: AAA, through Lucha Libre LLC, licensed LU through MGM/El Rey the right to use characters from AAA. However, for the TV show, they have their own separate contracts with the guys from AAA. EVW looks at "are there guys that I have under contract." Even though he knows that there's overlap in the ownership between AAA and LU, for the TV show, as the showrunner, his job is to "protect this little entity that is his show on the El Rey network." While all the things that are going on in the wrestling business do affect him, as far as he is concerned, as long as they haven't somehow violated their LU contract, they're on the active roster that the creative staff are writing for and at the next taping they're showing up.

When asked directly, "Do you have a good feeling that Fenix/Pentagon/Sexy Star/Jack Evans will be back when you start shooting Season 4?" He said he has "zero reason right now to believe those people won't be there" and they still have an active contract to perform on US television. "We're planning that they will be there."

He said there's things going on to try and put some key people in place to "connect the two arms of this thing" and make sure in the future that LU talent are treated properly in Mexico and people coming up from Mexico are treated properly here. They're trying to move to a situation where they can do better at supporting their people year-round. He said, coming from a TV show background, they didn't really think about keeping people busy between seasons, since that's not how it works in TV. But it doesn't do anyone any good if their people are starving in the off-season. Right now there's not any infrastructure in place to do much for people when they are on the off-season and they need to change that and do something with licensing guys to use their gimmicks in the off-season and support them better.

Return date: He said if the 5/31/17 date is on the El Rey banner, it's probably gospel. He had heard that date thrown around before. It would line up with what he was thinking before about El Rey wanting to run the premiere of new shows on the same date as Ultima Lucha 3.

It's real interesting if you read this guy's timeline (he's translating a Pentagon interview) -- Pentagon talking about how miserable AAA is but also wanting to work with LU still. I hope everything EVW was saying is true and LU can still use all the AAA people who left it.

Also the official Lucha Underground website got redone, with video links and direct merch links and news sections and stuff. Nice to see it as more than the barebones rear end page it has been since the start.

Also, the Wrestling Guy Store in Huntington Beach is selling these:

Which are bizarre. It's hard to believe those are officially licensed but on the other hand he @ed LU and that store is pretty tightly connected to them (lots of signings and appearances there) and he has to know how rabid Lucha Underground/MGM legal is about protecting its IP so...maybe they are official?

It'd be Lucha Underground's job to secure the American visas anyway.

It probably should have been, but they've told the story a bunch of times about how they got caught flat-footed and had to rewrite the first couple episodes on the fly because AAA told them the day before the first taping that a bunch of the talent couldn't work. So it definitely sounds like they were letting the AAA people handle that side of things, and I'm not at all surprised that AAA hosed it up and then pulled some sketchy poo poo to get guys across the border ASAP.

Ghidzilla posted:

I hope this won't rattle things too much going into season 4. :(

It shouldn't. Everyone who was already working S3 should have their papers in order, since according to Van Wagenen at that point MGM was checking these things -- which is probably why Daga got written out. If you want to talk who is running things, MGM is the real power behind LU at this point.

In terms of S4, the big question is whether the people who left AAA will still work LU, but both Pentagon and Fenix have said they want to keep doing it (Pentagon calling it the "best company he's ever worked for"), and Van Wagenen has said he still intends to use everyone. Sexy Star is maybe questionable since she "retired" that character and unmasked herself. Jack Evans, no one knows about but I imagine he's in the same boat as Fenix and Pentagon.

The only possible wrench in the works is that they put Dorian Roldan as a GM for the Lucha Libre FMV LLC. He's supposedly there primarily to get their merch in order and start setting up touring stuff, but if starts insisting that they not use the ex-AAA guys, who knows what it does. I have my doubts that he has the power on the LU side of things to insist on anything like that, especially for key guys like Pentagon and Fenix, but we'll see if he tries to be a problem.
