removing the jack was a real dick move but a smart one because all the Apple People are gonna buy the phone anyways AND the adapters that have licensing fees attached to them AND like it you filthy whore I dropped your Lightning connector on the floor; pick it up if you want it you bitch I KNOW YOU WANT IT ALSO YOU'RE FAT AND UGLY opus111 posted:My workmate spent all day bitching about the new iphone yesterday so naturally he preordered one this morning. £900 lmao. case in point I kind of wish there was a good smartphone that was also small and had good battery life and had a tactile keyboard attached that was worth a drat with a removable battery also it makes me breakfast and makes sound long-term investment decisions for me

That Fi thing looks cool and I'll keep it in mind but I'm currently in a situation where I'm using an old Verizon unlimited contract to wirelessly tether as my only internet and using like 100GB a month on streaming and online gaming and other things

2DCAT posted:Apple is okay at integration, but their actual engineering is crap. Their R&D budget is somewhere around 5%, which shows how little they value actual innovation. Most of the good tech they own is stuff that was developed but DARPA, acquired from SRI, or elsewhere. Apple makes their money from good marketing, not good engineering. A lot of companies would kill to get Apple's Harley Davidson-like product cult they've built up over the years; it's pretty amazing what they've accomplished from a marketing standpoint

notZaar posted:It's pretty clever, it means you don't need a battery in it and it will never get pushed off by drunk people swiping. It's really pretty neat- the thing generates an audio signal that the app reads through the Mic sorta channel on the phone. If you run an audio monitoring program on the phone and just stick the Square reader in there and swipe something with a mag strip you'll see the raw output. First one was literally a magstrip reader hooked up directly to the right points on the TRRS plug and like one resistor and later they added a PCB and an IC chip to do some sorta rudimentary encryption on the signal. I wonder if they'll still work with the Lightning connector adapter... if it has a Mic In thing built into it I don't see why not as all the Square app requires seems to be an audio signal.

I can almost get away with not needing a laptop and being able to do everything on a smartphone or tablet and a bluetooth keyboard on the road, but not quite. I don't really feel like I "need" a high-end one but next time I'm definitely springing for something better than bottom of the barrel garbage. Now if my old Samsung RV515 would just loving die

loquacius posted:Yeah that's why I'm still salty about it, I think. Take game consoles, they're also a stable duopoly. But whenever a game console maker makes an unpopular choice and figures that its fans are loyal enough that they'll stick around anyway, everyone just buys the other console and a valuable lesson is learned (ex: the PS3, the Xbone). But that doesn't apply to Apple, because Apple's fans will put up with anything. There's gotta be some kind of time limit on this though. Like imagine if they started just reaallly dropping the ball in a consequential and noticeable way and didn't stop for like a decade- would that erode their fanclub at all? Also have they given a non-bullshit answer as to why they dropped the jack yet?
