Something weird is happening, probably because of my new GPU and recording setup, so tonight's video will probably be late. Worse case is I have to re-record it.

That weird thing that was happening with the video? Completely my fault, it turns out. In the mean time I had gone through my entire recording setup and just about nuked it before I realized it was probably something from audio editing that I had hosed up. I swear this LP has more problems than any of the one's I've done before.

Anyways, Multiplayer. In all honesty, I haven't touched my PS4 in a week and so we're on some older videos here. I thought that some Man O War time would be preferential now considering how popular it became with people selecting loadouts. I think the thing I see when I watch this video is how I can have a 15-6 score line in TDM and still be third on my team...and the second place player has ten more kills than I do. The people I play with are really good at this game and I'm just hopeful that they'll be able to carry my slow rear end through Infinite Warfare and Modern Warfare Remastered just as well as they can in BLOPS III.

I really like the Man O War in multiplayer for a number of reasons. It doesn't have the crazy fire rate of some of the other rifles, making it a bit easier to manage ammo (though my constant reloading habit has yet to die), but it also happens to be pretty stable when fired full auto. The way CoD balances weapons usually works out like this: You have fire rate, damage and stability. One of the two will be the best, one will be average and one will be terrible. If you have the best damage you have the lowest fire rate weapon and handling will be the definition of average (see: Sheeva). If you have a gun with almost zero recoil it'll fire at an OK speed and have low damage. You get the picture. Despite this convention the developers almost always end up putting in a gun that is above average-average-ok when it comes to damage-recoil-fire rate, and in this game the Man O War is that gun. On the surface it's basically choosing to play as a human in an RPG. Good at everything without having one overwhelming strength and a set of weaknesses to balance it out. Normally that would make it a great starter weapon and not much else, but attachments make every gun fairly different. A Man O War with a grip can tap fire snipers to death without much issue. Put on rapid fire and a stock and you can down people using bare bones SMGs at close quarters. The averageness of the recoil and the fire rate combined with the above average damage make it a versatile weapon.

Oh, hey. This is still a thing, yeah. We're actually on the verge of being done in Egypt, which is pretty neat. When you think about it the game seemingly has only a couple locations, but listing them out it looks huge. Start in Ethiopia, train in virtual Switzerland, The Real Black Ops Begins Here in Singapore and then Egypt before the last stage of the game happens. Compare that to, say, Modern Warfare 3 which took you from New York City to a field in Russia to Paris and then Hamburg, London, a castle somewhere, a diamond mine in Russia and then Dubai for some dumb reason. Or even to Black Ops II (which is unfair because it had two timelines and not just two protagonists) that went from Africa to Panama to Nicaragua to LA to Burma to Egypt to an aircraft carrier to Haiti. Call of Duty games, since leaving WWII, do a lot of scenery jumping, but use common pallets and objects to build nearly everything, so in the first Modern Warfare the only indication you are in Ukraine over Russia is the game telling you so and maybe the lighting. BLOPS III does a really good job of varying up the environment in big and small ways within any particular location so that you are probably not going to see the same few props over and over within areas set in the same geographic location overly much. It's really a weird phenomenon that I attribute to the newly introduced three year development cycle on CoD games that allowed Treyarch the time to do a bit more with locations than in other titles in the franchise. It's a far cry from Infinity Ward literally reusing cutscenes and animations from a nearly decade old release.

The sand crawler thing we spend the video flying around and landing on is one of the more interesting features of the world. Essentially because of the climate effects that the game briefly touched on in the introduction giant trawlers like the one in this episode became a thing, essentially hunting water in arid locations. As even that water dried up they were simply abandoned, being so large and having so few purposes that keeping them operational and just moving them to a better location wasn't viable. I mean, from a design and engineering standpoint I'm sure these things function more like an offshore oil platform than a really, really big tank; still they end up reminding me of the Elephant vehicles from Halo 2. I also think they're the kind of oversized and overly expensive solution that will never work in the real world and we would be lucky to produce something like that within a 20 year design and production frame, but that's neither here nor there.

So boss fights. I don't like them in FPS games, or at least, war based FPS games. If you give me a boss fight in like, I don't know, Destiny I'm all over it. If you tell me to do a multistep process to do damage to a single opponent in a Ghost Recon game you can go gently caress yourself. This game does a pretty good job of subverting your expectations in some boss fights, the one against Hall turned into Far Cry 3, this one is fairly simple; still, it's a complete momentum killer in a game like this where you need to kill a bunch of guys all the time and then you have one dude who is invincible for one reason or another until you gently caress up some scenery. How could they have made this better? I'm not totally sure. Not including it, or making you do a really awesome fight to get to secure locations would have been a good idea, maybe bring back specialist enemy types like the warlords and shield guys to block your way instead of just throwing the same AR and SMG toting goons rushing at you and throwing more grenades than usual. I actually would have been fine with that. Maybe instead of sticking the fight inside generic room #45 and giving you the complication of a sniper firing at you the game could have made you counter snipe him on the outside of the giant, really cool machine thing where the level takes place.

I get the feeling that the levels were designed first and then the boss fights were fit in to them. The fight against Hall could have happened in any of the Egypt levels, this fight is in a room so basic I think it shares a shading pallet with the game's first mission, specifically the tunnel section where Hendricks kills that guard early on. Basically, don't put boss fights in FPS games unless you are fully committed to making them MORE interesting than the level they are in, otherwise you feel like you are ending things on a down note.

I felt like Black Ops 3, more than the other games in the franchise, loads almost all of the story into the final chapters. It takes two missions before you get to the main thrust of the campaign (hunting down Taylor) and you basically get everything you need out of Egypt in the first mission when you find out the Frozen Forest is a mental exercise. In the previous mission we found out that something if loving with DNIs and it's causing most of what Taylor and his team are doing and is going to gently caress us up, too. I guess you can make the case that each level builds up a bit of the world, but it really feels like the entire narrative of the game is about killing Taylor and his team where Black Ops II was a bit more, I don't know, dynamic? It starts off as a story about trying to stop a movement based around a former drug kingpin, and while the main thrust remains through the game, BLOPS II does a better job of adding a lot more depth and motivation to all the characters. It also had better "unique" moments where the game takes you out of the normal CoD stuff and puts restrictions on you or gives you different abilities or vehicles. BLOPS III offloads the "unique" stuff on your control cores. It's a nice idea, but unless you are dedicated to playing the campaign multiple times or hitting way more accolades than I am you will have a tough time earning enough unlock kits to see most of the abilities of at least one core. It's a nice concept insofar as replay value is concerned, but it's kind of annoying when you are LPing the game and want to show off stuff but had to make investments based on thread suggestions (I literally spent two unlocks on guns in my first playthrough compared to unlocking at least one in each category here. Don't get me started on tac rigs and explosives). I actually considered just doing this entire LP from my old file to make things a bit better and easier to show off, but ultimately decided a new run would be more fun and give the thread options on how to unlock stuff.

Look, just sign the stupid petition. I've got stuff to do.
I think part of the problem with the singleplayer's rank progression is that, since there's fewer ranks than there are in multiplayer, they felt they had to really jack up the number of experience points required for each rank in turn, and promptly made them almost Battlefield levels of ridiculous.

Beyond the fact that sending custom paintjobs for guns is apparently not possible despite the whole bit where you're able to upload them to some server with the intention that someone else will be able to download them from that server, the main reason I haven't been suggesting loadouts anymore is because I like to mess around with Overkill, but that's unlocked so drat late that it's simply not feasible to get it in a single normal playthrough, or reasonable to expect you to go out of your way to grind for a few hours to get it.

I think the real problem with the machine pistol is that it's for close quarters and/or lightly armored enemies, so it probably excels earlier in the game and in smaller rooms.

Of course, it seems you unlock it late enough that it's not going to be used when it would be most useful, so...

so wait the entire time the egyptian people were sitting on caches of guns staring into space while the army--which presumably has popular mass support in this timeline for whatever reason--got whittled down to like a couple hundred dudes, and were just waiting for a white chick who works with the CIA--a highly popular organization in Egypt also in this timeline--to huck the commanding officer of an army that up till now has walked all over the country off a three story building? and then they're like "OH YEAH WE GOT THIS THANKS FOR THE HELP, YO"

wh... what?

"They're disorganized with their leader dead"

WHY?!?!? Why are they disorganized? If they were so close to victory it seems like they pretty much know what to do even without DNIs or AR goggles or even fuckin' radios to just talk to each other and figure out some local stuff. Why do the robot armies care if the general dies while taking the midnight air on a balcony?!!? seems like the robots alone pretty much have things in the bag and killing the general wouldn't do much to affect the situation!

what is even the plot to this game. it would be better as a series of disconnected set pieces presented as a straight up highlight reel of "Lets Future-fight the Robots With TechnoMagic and Also Do It In WW2" because at least that's stupid-funny and not stupid-awful. if you're really upset at having to think about your story then don't have one or just make it The United Fakes Wars With Madeupistan

We're on the cusp of being done here and the game goes and drops a plot twist on us. It's not like it wasn't telegraphed.

I wanted to say that I don't really like the fight at the end of the video and it was the one part of the game I practiced through before starting the LP (and I still almost forgot about the minigun). I don't understand why, considering how much the CoD franchise loves their waypoints, they didn't just put a waypoint on the minigun instead of saying "it's in the supply drop" like that's a thing. Of course I couldn't find it at first, the supply drop that shows up right in front of me doesn't have it, and the way Kane says it makes it sound like it's a selectable weapon, not a pick up item. That's just bad writing and level layout working in tandem to confuse the player.

We've been infected with a dangerous mind virus that manifests as totally sweet 80s metal band cover art.

Which just goes to show you that a good actor does not necessarily make a good voice actor. Christopher Meloni consistently knocked it out of the park in Law and Order: SVU.

And was one of the only tolerable characters to watch in Man of Steel.

A pissed off raven flying out of an explosion shaped like a skull may as well have been a Judas Priest album cover, you are right.

I know I sound a bit rough in the video here, I've been suffering some sort of throat/respiratory issue since last Saturday (which has not stopped me from running 5+ miles a day, so my lungs are still good) that has just completely wrecked my ability to talk. After I recorded the episode I thought the torture was over and then I found out there were weird glitches with the video and had to record it all over again, which was probably for the best as the first commentary track sucked a lot.

Seeing as how this is the last level and I had to break it into two parts I am going to go and ask that everyone refrain from posting their theories about the end of the game outside of spoiler tags for now. This time next week I'll be making a final story post (no video) that will lay things out and any discussion on the story after that can safely be left outside of spoiler tags.

I wonder why the video gets all janky right as the mission starts, it seems fine after that.

It's okay, just imagine yourself in a frozen forest.

Yes, tell the near-omnipotent AI with self-identity issues that its existence is a mistake. These things never go wrong.

Yeah, nobody in this game seems to react to anything like a normal and/or sane human being.

I'm not saying to just bend over and agree with everything the crazy AI says, but maybe, you know, answer its question?

"You were created to monitor the population for terrorist activity. Your current status was an unexpected emergent property of the experiment."

See? Gives the same information, but in a way that doesn't piss off the godlike but kind of stupid AI without cause. Instead, you can have a conversation, and maybe even talk it into working with you rather than murdering you. I mean, it likes having mindstate copies of people around, you like getting intel on people's secret thoughts, you're halfway to a workable deal already.

I guess at this point the "writers" just went for broke and had to cross off more stuff on their list of edginess.

Corvus is an interesting virus/character in that it clearly feels guilt for being involved with getting so many people killed in Singapore, and tries this frozen forest digital afterlife as a way to preserve life, but it also wants to expand, expand, expand as much as possible.

Look, just sign the stupid petition. I've got stuff to do.
Protocol Override and Remote Hijack are kind of disappointing abilities, really. I focused on the latter in particular because it was basically the reason I was actually able to beat the combat immersion once - every time I got attacked by anything big and dangerous I'd just hide behind one of the chest-high walls and hijack whichever one I thought would be good for destroying everything else with. Then I bring it to campaign and every time I fight against anything comparable it's "already being controlled", so I'm poo poo out of luck.

Not to mention little else from that core is as good as it sounds, either. Ravage Core sounds metal as all hell, but even if you can ignore the part where the game will print the "press <grenade> to ravage core" message like half a second before it will actually count pressing the grenade button for ravaging their core rather than, y'know, tossing a grenade, I just can't get good use out of it. Even having the upgrade to the blast radius doesn't make it particularly good at catching other robots in the blast radius - or even really doing anything to robots that are caught in it.

It's an awesome-sounding core that outside of maybe Augmentation Breakdown is really only useful in extremely specific circumstances, and sometimes even very slight variances in those circumstances make it useless.

Corvus has clearly passed through melancholia and anger to reach jealousy.

Sadly, it's going to get protagonist'd in the face before it can reach meta-stability. But not everyone can be Dur-dur-dur-dur-an-dal.

He ain't no slouch, pal.

I think that the AI is baiting itself. How can it "capture" someone like baldo without knowing him completely? Why bother asking questions? That guy is dead, and the AI is questioning/threatening a simulation running within its own consciousness.
