Based on the Vanity Fair Article by Nick Bilton http://www.vanityfair.com/news/2016/09/elizabeth-holmes-theranos-exclusive Featuring: https://twitter.com/shanevader/status/773720109529509888 Elizabeth Holmes as CEO of Theranos quote:[H]er reverence for Steve Jobs was perhaps most glaring. Besides the turtlenecks, Holmes’s proprietary blood-analysis device, which she named “Edison” after Thomas Edison, resembled Jobs’s NeXT computer. She designed her Theranos office with Le Corbusier black leather chairs, a Jobs favorite. She also adhered to a strange diet of only green juices (cucumber, parsley, kale, spinach, romaine lettuce, and celery), to be drunk only at specific times of the day. Like Jobs, too, her company was her life. She rarely ever left the office, only going home to sleep. To celebrate her birthday, Holmes held a party at Theranos headquarters with her employees. (Her brother, Christian, also works at Theranos.) Marine General James “Mad Dog” Mattis as Theranos Board Member quote:In 2012, for instance, Holmes began talking to the Department of Defense about using Theranos’s technology on the battlefield in Afghanistan. But specialists at the D.O.D. soon uncovered that the technology wasn’t entirely accurate, and that it had not been vetted by the Food and Drug Administration. When the department notified the F.D.A. that something was amiss, according to The Washington Post, Holmes contacted Marine general James Mattis, who had initiated the pilot program. He immediately e-mailed his colleagues about moving the project forward. Mattis was later added to the company board when he retired from the service. (Mattis says he never tried to interfere with the F.D.A. but rather was “interested in rapidly having the company’s technologies tested legally and ethically.”) Henry Kissinger as Theranos Board Member quote:As Holmes started to assemble her board of directors, she chose a dozen older white men, almost none of whom had a background in anything related to health care. This included former secretary of state Henry Kissinger, former secretary of state George Shultz, former Georgia senator and chairman of the Armed Services Committee Sam Nunn, and William J. Perry, the former defense secretary. (Bill Frist, the former Senate majority leader, and former cardiovascular doctor, was an exception.) A scene has already been released as a preview: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=afNR1clZNYc quote:By the time she returned to Palo Alto, the consensus was that it was time, at last, for Holmes to address her hundreds of employees. A company-wide e-mail instructed technicians in lab coats, programmers in T-shirts and jeans, and a slew of support staff to meet in the cafeteria. There, Holmes, with Balwani at her side, began an eloquent speech in her typical baritone, explaining to her loyal colleagues that they were changing the world. As she continued, Holmes grew more impassioned. The Journal, she said, had gotten the story wrong. [Journal reporter] Carreyrou, she insisted, with a tinge of fury, was simply picking a fight. She handed the stage to Balwani, who echoed her sentiments.

quote:Countless investors have been quick to point out that they did not invest in the company—that much of its money came from the relatively somnolent worlds of mutual funds, which often accrue the savings of pensioners and retirees; private equity; and smaller venture-capital operations on the East Coast. In the end, one of the only Valley V.C. shops that actually invested in Theranos was Draper Fisher Jurvetson. Many may have liked what Holmes represented about their industry, but they didn’t seem to trust her with their money. I wonder how much of the $9,000,000,000 net worth estimate on Theranos came from loving over the elderly (in addition to loving over Wellness Center patients).

Private equity has been getting more investments from pension funds, so a lot of regular people probably got hosed by Theranos without even knowing. Like if Holmes was only scamming Thiel and other tech vampires I'd almost be a fan, but instead the operation was burning money and endangering patients.

Big pension funds LOVE these stupid PE ventures now, it's loving insane. Union funds, government funds, whatever, gotta get those fat returns. Check it out folks, we're now partners to a strip mall property venture or something, hooray!

Theranos sent the genetic samples they processed for $9 to UCSF [sort of the premiere pharma facing university in the world] to be processed for like $120 and it was a giant joke in the biotech community who was completely aware of what was going on. There was something to the science, but like most of these companies they couldn't get it consistent and likely couldn't pass a GxP audit so then they defrauded people and are now the giant joke of the industry.

there is actually a Jlaw vehicle on this in production right? She'll somehow be twisted into a sympathetic figure lead astray because of her fem-power ambition we wish we all had, which called for her to drop out of actual science her sophomore year and also cause (((kissinger))) was whispering sweet nothings into her ear

Sure the company was a sham, but Jennifer Lawrence will play Holmes on the big screen, at worst I'd call that a wash for her. Has anyone said "Theranope" yet, because if not I'd like to claim it.

Yeah this is actually gonna be a Jlaw movie directed by Adam McKayquote:Legendary Pictures emerged victorious and has landed Bad Blood, the pitch package that will be written and directed by Adam McKay, with Jennifer Lawrence starring as Elizabeth Holmes, founder of the controversial blood-test company Theranos. Legendary will pay around $3.5 million for the script to be written by McKay, who just shared a Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar for The Big Short. Universal will distribute through its deal with Legendary. The pic will have a budget between $40 million and $50 million. There is aggressive progress to production language, with McKay and Lawrence able to take the project elsewhere quickly, should it not go forward quickly. Landing the prestige picture is Mary Parent’s first major move to stamp her regime since taking the production reins at Legendary, and she prevailed over Paramount. Paramount was the other finalist in a bidding process that at one point had 10 suitors in the mix. Paramount distributed and marketed The Big Short, which got five Oscar nominations in total. One of the factors that gave the Uni/Legendary the upper hand was Legendary’s Wanda ownership, which gives the company a strong reach in China, as evidenced by the strong returns there on Warcraft. lol Bad Blood. Do you think it's going to have the Taylor Swift song in it?
