So a priest walks into a party...The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky the 3rd

-A Faint Glitter of Light-

The epilogue installment of Falcom's Trails in the Sky JRPGs is finally out in English. Trails in the Sky the 3rd does away with some major conventions from the first two games. Estelle and Joshua Bright are no longer the main characters. Instead of roaming more-or-less freely around the Liberl Kingdom, The 3rd takes place in a huge linear dungeon much like the Altered Spaces from SC's Chapter 7. There are far fewer surprisingly-intricate backstories for random faceless townsfolk. Sidequests are a thing of the past, and you only ever have one goal: to fight your way through the dungeon and escape.

That must sound like a recipe for disaster, but I'd say The 3rd is the best yet--a wonderful send-off for the Trails in the Sky series and all the characters I've gotten to know and love.

I'm going to assume that anyone reading is already familiar with Trails in the Sky FC and SC, because...well, you kind of need to be if you want to have any bearing on what's going on.

I sure wish every job I had was this easy.

Is 640x480 an okay image size? Are any of my .GIFs too big?

What tumult?

It was twenty years ago that villages throughout this land met their ruin, you know.
For that was when the Orthodoxy ordered all roads be blocked to spare the city of Eternia from the approaching plague.
And Everlast Tower and Eternian Central Command that yet stand there in the city? They were once the property of the Crystal Orthodoxy, you know.
Everlast Tower was the Temple of Earth, and Eternian Central Command was the Orthodoxy's head temple. Hmmm, yes, that was what they were once called.
They were the reason the Orthodoxy sought to stem the plague's spread before it reached the city.
And yet that meant the Orthodoxy sacrificed countless lives in outlying villages to save what they held sacred.
Hrmm, perhaps the templar, ever concerned for the people, could not forgive that.
The day he invaded, he attacked the Temple of Earth straightaway, the very place his former masters sought to save.
But the people saw his actions as heroic. For it was he who ordered the energy welling forth from the Earth Crystal be fused with white magic and used to advance medicine.
So it was that death by sickness has been nearly vanquished from our land. We can now live without fear of an untimely demise.
But is he a hero who freed us from the terrors of sickness? Or a usurper who brings terrors unto the world?
It all depends upon one's perspective, I suppose.

Masquerada: Songs and Shadows is a fantasy CRPG developed by Witching Hour Studios, and published by Ysbryd Games in 2016. The story is set in the Citte della Ombre, pictured above--a place where a good day means only being figuratively stabbed in the back, and where the haves hold themselves above the have-nots with ancient relics called Mascherines: magic masks that command the four elements. It's one of the best games I've played this year, with real-time-with-pause combat that's actually fast-paced and free of bloat, vibrant visuals, a haunting orchestral soundtrack, piles of unique background flavor, a cast of great characters with excellent voice work from most of the usual suspects...just tons and tons of positive critical buzzwords. I've never seen many people talking the game up here, though, so maybe I can help introduce someone to it.

Prologue

I guess my main concern is: is it okay for everything in screenshots to be real real tiny, and for the battle screens to look like incomprehensible rear end

That's 40 megs of pngs for a single update! Definitely use jpg for this.

The screenshots looks fine to me, but they're a bit bigger than the archive accepts (900px wide) so it wouldn't be a bad idea to shrink them a bit more, or maybe crop the sides a little. You can always crop more selectively if there are parts where you think details may be lost - for instance, in this you could easily take out the border and let the image take more space.

Battle scenes basically always look like incomprehensible rear end in a game like that; I don't think there's much you can do about it.

Here's another attempt, now with 900px jpegs on LPix.

Hwurmp
May 20, 2005

I planned on going through all possible choices before advancing and leaving handholds on, for a few reasons. Characters have different things to say on every path, and it means more XP+Amber too. As for the assists, the idea of just omitting part of the game felt kind of silly and I wasn't sure there'd be enough interest for a vote. Omensight also has a second ending now, which requires you to fill the assist list out completely.

I could always link the assists for people who'd rather skip them.

I should be able to come up with a feasible workflow for Masquerada: Songs and Shadows now, but before I work up another test post I have a question. The game lets you resize the GUI at your leisure. The first screenshot here has the GUI scaled to 100%, and the second is at 150%. Which one looks better? Should I use one size for screenshots and another for video?

Masquerada: Songs and Shadows is a tactical role-playing game developed by Witching Hour Studios and published by Ysbryd Games in September 2016. Witching Hour took pains to dispense with as many RPG traditions as possible. Masquerada doesn't bother with character levels, gold, ability scores, damage types, or inventory management. Your party only gets five members in all, and an average playthrough should take twelve hours at most. There's little exploration and no backtracking. There's scarcely any side content--many things that would be optional in another RPG, like party members' personal stories, are integrated into the main plot. Sometimes Masquerada can feel a little too simple but for the most part all this fat-trimming is of immense benefit, offering both gameplay and narrative that are tightly designed and well-paced with no time wasted. Masquerada even manages to prove that real-time-with-pause combat does not have to suck.

The setting is just as unique, taking its cues from Alexandre Dumas instead of J.R.R. Tolkien. Ombre is a city-state where neighborhoods are prizes for aristocrats to fight over, a good day means only getting figuratively stabbed in the back, and the haves separate themselves from the have-nots by use of Moskareens Mascherines: magical masks from a lost civilization that grant their wearers power over the elements. Life is cheap and it's only common sense to exploit and manipulate everyone around you. Masquerada's story doesn't wallow too much in edgy grimdark, though, mostly focusing instead on strangers learning to trust in each other and find hope for a better life.

All in all I think this game's fantastic. I've played lots of great games this past year but Masquerada: Songs and Shadows was still one of my favorites out of them all.
