As a little girl growing up, my wife was only allowed to have very limited participation in weddings. She couldn't really go anywhere near the bride or the wedding chamber whereas other kids would be invited to roll around on the bed for good luck (especially Rabbits). All of this because she was born in the year of the Tiger.

Taiwan still carries a lot of the cultural baggage of being Chinese. Kids who have night terrors or bad dreams are regularly taken to exorcists. It's just what you do, don't you know?

The announcement came after the ride-share service was fined by Taiwan's government repeatedly, amassing fines of up to NT$1.1 billion (approximately US$35 million) since Jan. 6.

The Transportation Ministry ordered Uber Taiwan to cease operations and said that the service ban would continue until the company abided by local laws.

I rarely ever see people playing the fighting games when I go to the lovely arcades, the big crowd is always around that one where you have to guess which of 4 monkeys will climb the tree the fastest. I always figured he was on the autistic spectrum and really immature. This thread has opened my eyes to how culturally ingrained some of these behaviors are.

My co-worker is dating a fellow from south africa and there's a lot of this "cultural time" poo poo. "Are you free to help me move from 3 till 6?" yes. Then you just show up to some or none when ever you have time and act very confused when people are upset because you certainly don't expect anyone else to be punctual or do what they said. Already an hour late to an event and they're asking you if you are coming? Say yes even if you're still in bed. Just always say yes. Can you finish this by the end of the work day? Yes. You didn't finish it, will it be done in the morning? yes. You said it would be done in the morning?? Afternoon? yes. next day? Yes. Always yes, it's always ready soon. It's not that you don't know how long it will take, you knew from the start it would take 3 days, but you just say yes to what ever timeline they said because it will be done when it's done, what's the fuss?? Have a rest.

I'm glad to see people saying 'take a rest.' For some reason Korean ex-pats lose it over this particular phrase and will insist up and down that a native English speaker would never say it, ever.

Though, at least Korea had running water and electricity.
