China has non-dash lines boundary issues.

http://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-china-37515391

China's recent obsession with glass tourist attractions has gone round the U-bend with the opening of some see-through treetop public toilets.

The loos, near Shiyan Lake in southern Hunan province, have fabulous views of both the forest below and other people using the facilities. Cubicle walls, even those between the men's and women's sections, are only separated by lightly frosted glass.

But state media said few visitors dared use the loos on their opening day.

Despite a boom in the construction of glass bridges and walkways in scenic locations in China in recent years - in some cases so popular they had to be closed - these are thought to be the first entirely glass public bathrooms in the country. However, it not the first time those busting to go have been exposed a little more than they might like by the enthusiasm for glass.

There were reports recently of some male toilets in a university dorm in Hunan which included one very public cubicle.

News of the wide-view WCs at Shiyan Lake sparked a range of reactions online. Responding to a Facebook post about it by state television channel CCTV, Ejike Nnadi summed up the feelings of many: "Hell no." Others were more taken by the idea. "You'll be surprised by what you can tolerate when you really, really need to go," said one post.

Another nodded towards another modern use for restrooms: "I'd be in there 'til my battery hit zero if there was signal in there!"

Tina Chen took a dimmer view of all such projects though. "(It) is not about being shy, just again someone had extra money to waste."\

Awkward or not, it is hoped that these bathrooms for the brave will encourage tourists to visit the countryside around Changsha city and admire the spectacular autumn colours of its forests.

I can't wait for the inevitable nationalist BS to follow.

Three Chinese fishermen have died in a fire after their boat was boarded by the South Korean coastguard.

The men, who were suspected of illegal fishing, were caught in the blaze after the coastguard officers threw a "flashbang" or stun grenade into part of their boat where they were hiding.

It is believed they died of smoke inhalation, an official said, and an autopsy has been ordered.

Fourteen other fishermen survived and are being questioned by authorities.

The incident began when a coastguard vessel identified the fishing boat in South Korean waters, and ordered it to stop for inspection.

A coastguard official said the men ignored the commands, and barricaded themselves inside the wheel-house while the boat continued to travel. Officers then fired "flashbang" or stun grenades into the space, after which a fire broke out.

Flashbang grenades are designed to be non-lethal, producing a very loud noise and intense light which temporarily affects vision and hearing. They can also disrupt a person's balance by affecting fluids in the inner ear.

Chinese authorities have requested a full investigation, and South Korea's coastguard has said one is already under way.

Fishing in South Korean waters by Chinese vessels is permitted with the proper authorisation, but illegal fishing has become a point of contention between the two countries in recent years.

Finished the Opium War by Julia Lovell. It is depressing how little China had changed. Whether it is Communists, Nationalist, Emperors, it's all the same.

The British and the French didn't gently caress around with the second Opium War but this time took a lot more casualties due to an improved Qing military and some very questionable tactics. The Chinese being master negotiators as they are decided to torture to death some of the negotiators sent to conclude the War which lead directly to the sacking and destruction of the Summer palace along with other unprofessional behaviours. At this point virtually every western power carve out concessions from the Qing demanding free trade, extra territoriality and missionaries.

This fatally wounds the Qing Empire leading to it's dissolution in 1912. The Warlord period follows as China becomes a failed state for a while. The Opium trade grows as Warlords, Nationalist and communists alike trade in to to fund their private wars. Culturally almost nothing has changed as Face persist to this day even though it does nothing but hold them back.

I am now reading Flying Upside down by Captain Duke Nukem nd ex-pat pilot. It is this thread but with Air planes and it is as horrifying as you can imagine it is. Yes and no. Putting off maintenance on an other part that is not part of the current cycle increases the risk of something going wrong. Naturally if it is something critical it gets fixed, but having to pay extra instead of just fixing it on the spot with your in-house crew can't really be saving that much money for the increased risk along with the time lag by having to fly an empty aircraft away from your hub.

It can be lonely even with 1.3 Billion other people.

http://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-china-37686968

quote:

Sad news for elderly lonely hearts in Shanghai: they can no longer look for love in Ikea.

The Swedish furniture giant's Shanghai store has seen a strange phenomenon of senior citizens descending upon its famed cafeteria to socialise and even find partners.

Locals said it occurs twice weekly, usually on Tuesdays and Thursdays. China's state broadcaster CCTV News reported that the elderly patrons would often buy a cup of coffee or some bread and "spend an entire day just chatting with others". They are believed to be part of a dating community, making use of their Ikea membership cards.

This week, Ikea put a stop to it by imposing a strict "no food, no seating" rule to discourage senior citizens from occupying canteen seats for "extended periods". In a notice posted at the entrance of the Ikea Shanghai Restaurant, staff identified an "illegal blind-dating group" and accused it of "uncivilised behaviour". "The situation has adversely affected the dining experience and security of most of our customers," it said, adding that it had received public complaints about "spitting" and "quarrels and fights".

"It is having a negative implication for our canteen's operation. From today, the restaurant will only be for people who purchase their food first."

The news has attracted attention from netizens on Chinese social media, with many in support of the elderly.

"They are harmless," wrote Ed Ed Chiu in a reply to a post by CCTV News on the popular Chinese micro-blogging Sina Weibo platform.

Weibo user Lee Xin slammed the move as a "draconian measure" and said it was cruel to elderly patrons.

"What wrong are they doing? They are lonely and are probably hoping to find some company again. If anything, the store should practise empathy and at least sympathise with these old people," she said.

The move was criticised by some elderly patrons, who spoke to local media outlets.

"We've been to fast food outlets like McDonald's - but there are barely any peers there," said an 86-year-old man who went by the name of Qiu.

Mr Qiu told the state-controlled Global Times newspaper: "We feel like aliens - surrounded by youngsters. If there is another place in Shanghai where elderly people can gather, we are more than ready to pay twice as much and travel further."

But others online voiced support for the store's management, praising its efforts in "maintaining store policy".

"Intolerable behaviour," said one Weibo user. "I'm with the management on this. It's deplorable how people are caught photographed sleeping on Ikea displays, what more spitting and swearing in public? This should not be tolerated at all."

Another user Lao Gao from Beijing wrote: "To everyone romanticising this, please also consider that the store has an image to uphold while protecting the interests of other paying customers. It is ugly behaviour to take up seats for such long durations while you make others wait."

Are the Pro-bejing group scared that they will get placed against the wall (And harvested) if Beijing doesn't get what it wants 100% of the time? They're getting schooled by High school kids over Oaths. Boat rocked by only a couple of words.

The swearing-in session of the Legislative Council on Wednesday was adjourned after pro-establishment lawmakers walked out in an effort to block three lawmakers from retaking their oaths.

Pro-Beijing lawmaker Wong Ting-kwong, who left out one instance of “Hong Kong” in his oath during last week’s swearing-in session, was the first to retake the pledge on Wednesday, followed by architecture functional lawmaker Edward Yiu Chung-yim.

Before independent lawmaker-elect Lau Siu-lai and Youngspiration’s Yau Wai-chin and “Baggio” Leung Chung-hang could retake their oaths, pro-establishment lawmakers staged a walkout.

Their action led to an adjournment of the swearing-in session as the number of lawmakers present fell below the quorum requirement.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U3BVLehKC_w

Independent Paul Tse Wai-chung earlier demanded the Youngspiration duo apologise, and urged other pro-establishment politicians to walk out of the chamber in protest.

Pro-democracy lawmakers called the pro-Beijing camp’s walkout a “violent and blunt” action.

Cheng Chung-tai of localist party Civic Passion said: “This is how [the pro-Beijing camp] does harm to Hong Kong society.”

Pro-Beijing lawmaker Martin Liao Cheung-kong said: “To deprive the chamber of a quorum was a difficult, painful decision. When Paul Tse suggested the tactic, we did not know the government would file for an injunction.”

Late on Tuesday, the High Court denied an application for an interim injunction launched by the government to block the Youngspiration politicians from re-taking their oaths. However, the government was granted leave for judicial review and a hearing is scheduled for November 3.

Youngspiration’s Leung earlier said that the pronunciation of China as “Chee-na” in last week’s oath-taking session is due to his “Ap Lei Chau” accent. “Chee-na” has a similar pronunciation as “Shina,” an archaic Japanese term that is now considered offensive to many Chinese people.

Leung said that he planned to retake the pledge in Cantonese.

https://www.hongkongfp.com/2016/10/22/philippines-duterte-says-will-not-sever-us-ties-announcing-realignment-china/

quote:

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte said Saturday he would not sever his nation’s alliance with the United States, as he clarified his announcement that he planned to “separate”.

“It’s not severance of ties. Severance is to cut diplomatic relations. I can not do that. Why? It’s in the best interests of my country that I don’t do that,” Duterte told reporters in his hometown of Davao after returning from China. The firebrand leader signalled on Thursday during his four-day state visit to Beijing that he intended to end the Philippines’ 70-year alliance with the United States in favour of China and Russia.

“I announce my separation from the United States,” Duterte told a group of Chinese businessmen.

“America has lost. I’ve realigned myself in your ideological flow and maybe I will also go to Russia to talk to (President Vladimir) Putin and tell him that there are three of us against the world: China, Philippines and Russia. It’s the only way.”

Until Duterte took office on June 30, the Philippines had been one of the United States’ most important and loyal allies in Asia, and a key to President Barack Obama’s “pivot” to the region. But since becoming president Duterte has done a dramatic foreign policy U-turn that has baffled Washington.

US State Department spokesman John Kirby said on Thursday that the United States would seek clarification from the Philippines about the “separation” remark. “It’s not clear to us exactly what that means in all its ramifications,” he said.

Duterte on Saturday gave a series of comments to clarify those remarks.

“Sever is to cut. Separate is just to chart another way of doing,” he said.

“What I’m really saying was separation of foreign policy, which in the past and until I became president, we always followed what the United States would give the cue.”

Nevertheless, Duterte launched another tirade against the United States for criticising his war on crime, which has left more than 3,600 people dead and raised fears about extrajudicial killings. Duterte said a defence pact signed in 2014, known by the acronym of EDCA and which allows for a much greater US military presence in the Philippines, remained in jeopardy. “It will affect EDCA and the rest of the agreements, maybe, I will have to consult the military, the police and everybody,” he said.

Duterte also said he did not care if the United States or the European Union cut their foreign aid to the Philippines, worth hundreds of millions of dollars a year, over concerns about human rights abuses in his war on crime.

US President Barack Obama welcomes Chinese President Xi Jinping during a State Arrival ceremony on the South Lawn of the White House in Washington, DC, September 25, 2015. Photo: AFP/Saul Loeb.

“Assistance, USAID, you can go to hell,” he said, referring to the US government’s overseas economic and development assistance organisation.

Duterte often laces his rhetoric with vulgar language, and has repeatedly referred to US President Barack Obama as a “son of a whore”.

On Saturday he let loose again at US and European critics of his war on crime.

“You sons of whores. Your euro, that’s a piece of paper. You run out of toilet paper, you wipe up your rear end,” he said in a rant that at times appeared not to make sense. “You guys are bullshit. Why am I saying this? It sounds the height of vulgarity. You started it.”

Duterte, 71, also repeated criticism of the American invasion of Iraq in 2003, saying it was based on a lie and triggered turmoil in the Middle East that cost many lives. “If there is one thing that America has failed miserably, it is in the province of the human dignity,” he said at the end of his critique of US foreign policy in the Middle East.

Duterte said he also endorsed Russian efforts to keep Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in power. “If Assad is out they (the United States) will have destroyed the entire Middle East,” he said.

The sailor, who was the first Chinese person to sail solo around the world,
left San Francisco on 18 October with the aim of reaching Shanghai within 20 days.

Shortly after his team lost contact with him, a search plane was sent to his last coordinates, about 600 miles (966km) off the Hawaiian island of Oahu.
Broken sail

Chinese state news agency Xinhua reported that the boat, the Qingdao China, was spotted with its main sail snapped off and in the water.

Mr Guo was not seen onboard the 97ft (26.5m) trimaran.

US ships are now heading to the boat. A Coast Guard spokesman told AP news agency that Mr Guo had been in good health and was an experienced sailor, "so that gives us some hope".

Mr Guo was trying to break the current speed record for his journey, which is 21 days.

He was the first Chinese person to sail around the world alone when he completed his trans-navigation of the globe in a 12m yacht in 2013.

Bribery during elections is now ok as long as you are a cheapskate.

https://www.hongkongfp.com/2016/10/27/student-allegedly-bought-votes-will-not-face-investigation-amount-immaterial-report/

quote:

University of Hong Kong student Printa Zhu Ke will not face investigation over a bribery allegation because the university’s governing council considered the amount involved to be “immaterial,” Ming Pao has reported.

Zhu, who is from mainland China, was embroiled in a bribery scandal after his opponent Michael Mo Kwan-tai revealed materials that allegedly showed Zhu buying votes from classmates in his bid to become the postgraduate student member of the HKU Council. Mo reported the case to the school and the Independent Commission Against Corruption last week.

The HKU Council announced on Wednesday that Zhu was elected as the postgraduate student representative with a voter turnout of about 10 per cent. Zhu also won the election last year.

The Council did not disclose the details of its decision not to investigate Zhu. A source told local newspaper Ming Pao that the 20-member Council decided by a 9:7 vote to dismiss Mo’s complaint on the basis that the amount – totalling RMB80 – given out by Zhu was “immaterial.”

The source told Ming Pao that most of the Council members who voted against Zhu were HKU members, while those who voted for Zhu were appointed from outside the school. Under Hong Kong law, the chief executive has the power to appoint one-third of HKU Council members.

HKU Vice-Chancellor Peter Mathieson confirmed to Oriental Daily on Wednesday that the leaked information was accurate.

Last week, Mo revealed screenshots that allegedly showed Zhu sending out his campaign details and distributing virtual red packets containing money to his classmates via the messaging app WeChat. In some screenshots, after Zhu posted his campaign poster and red packet in a group chat, several members told him that they had voted and one asked for the link to vote online.

Zhu responded that the money was to reimburse those who had helped with campaign promotion. He uploaded screenshots of his red packet account, which showed that the amounts transacted were all below RMB2.

‘Legitimising bribery’

HKU Student Union leader Althea Suen, who sits on the Council as the undergraduate representative, said that the most important factor should not be the transaction amount, but whether Zhu’s conduct has affected his integrity, the fairness of the election process, and the university’s reputation.

She added that it is inappropriate for the Council to arrive at a decision by vote before fully investigating the case.

Mo told HKFP that the Council’s decision to not hold a hearing before voting is a “political way” to resolve a legal matter. “[This] is wrong in my opinion,” he said.
Michael Mo hku

“I think this is a starting point of HKU’s legitimisation of election bribery at the governance level,” he said. “If it’s not corrected, I’m sure it will become a norm in the near future.”

Zhu could not be reached for comment. He said earlier that his opponent had tried to gain publicity by stirring up sensational stories.

‘Undesirable culture’

Barrister Chris Ng of the Progressive Lawyers Group told HKFP that the HKU Council’s decision is reasonable because Zhu may have a strong defense for two reasons: first, Hong Kong’s ordinances do not cover this type of alleged bribery. Second, there are common law cases in which a gift of insignificant value was considered not capable of “influencing” voters, thereby failing to establish the act of bribery.

“But even if it may be permissible by law, it doesn’t always mean it is morally acceptable,” Ng said. “Zhu was lucky this time, but this kind of behaviour should not be encouraged.”
hku gate

He gave the example of a mainland Chinese businessman who was jailed for six months in September after trying to bribe an HSBC employee with a bottle of perfume. The magistrate said the mainlander brought “undesirable culture” to Hong Kong, which must not be encouraged.

Ng said he agrees with the magistrate on the matter. “Especially since there are a lot of cross-border businesses, it is necessary to let [mainland Chinese] know that an important core value of Hong Kong is integrity – in both public and private sectors,” he said.

He added: “Schools should hold students to a higher standard. HKU should condemn Zhu’s conduct and follow up with the matter strictly according to the regulations.”

The governing council system in Hong Kong has for years been criticised for being susceptible to political influence due to the law which stipulates that the chief executive is the chancellor of ten universities and can appoint outside members to the councils.
