I'm looking for a flock of urbanmechs.

In 1997, Warren Spector got carte blanche to create the game of his dreams at Ion Storm Austin, and so that's exactly what he did. Three years later, in the year 2000, Eidos published the groundbreaking game Deus Ex. It was a landmark in FPS-RPG integration and level design, and most of all it let players feel like their choices matter both in terms of gameplay choices and story decisions (and that's despite the fact that you always wind up in the same place on both counts).

At the end of 2003, Ion Storm Austin released Deus Ex: Invisible War, which...disappointed a lot of people. The gameplay was good, the story was still far stronger than its contemporaries, and the graphics were largely ahead of their time, but the game also fell on its face on several fronts.

The vast levels of the first game were gone, replaced by some downright claustrophobic maps separated by long load times thanks to how they developed it simultaneously for the PC and the original Xbox. The inventory was massively slimmed down, all the weapons used the same ammunition, and choosing your augs was no longer the critical, gameplay-defining choice it was in the original. At the same time, the story had abandoned its rooted-in-the-real-world feel thanks to taking place 20 years after a low-level apocalypse, and (to speak personally) I wasn't very happy to find out that most of my decisions throughout the first two-thirds of the game were utterly meaningless. DX1 never gave you a choice in your allegiance, either, but at least it didn't pretend like it did.

Two years after Invisible War put in some disappointing sales numbers, Ion Storm Austin folded, and the DX franchise would lie fallow for the next four years. After that, however, the publisher Eidos opened a new developer studio in Montreal, and the folks in charge decided to take up the Deus Ex flag as their first project.

Eidos Montreal went for the relatively unusual tactic of hiring a smaller team for a longer development cycle. They also made sure the story and gameplay leads were communicating with each other, something which not all developers consider a necessary step in the process.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution, which came out in 2011, is also a significant step away from the original, but it manages to stay true to its source in several key ways. The gameplay is still a seamless mix of stealth and action, there are still multiple paths through any given area, and you can still discover an absurd amount of incidental dialog from people roaming the streets (fewer lines per person, but more people overall). The inventory grid is back (and it's self-arranging!), the decisions you make can have lasting consequences (if not story consequences), and while the skill points and the aug points have been mixed together, Human Revolution still manages to make those points count better than Invisible War did.

Human Revolution also manages to sidestep the problem of Invisible War's setting by taking place in 2027, 25 years before the original. Like most sci-fi prequels, HR unabashedly makes use of today's futurisms rather than those of a decade before, replacing bulky robots and trenchcoat chic with slimmed-down carbon fiber weaves and Eidos Montreal's own brand of New Renaissance fashion that plays into one of the game's major motifs (plus it gave the model artists something fun to do). Of course, now that it's five years later, HR's technology is also starting to look noticeably outdated, but that's all part of the fun of science fiction.

Ultimately, I'd say that Human Revolution isn't as amazing or as groundbreaking as the original Deus Ex was, but it manages to be a more worthy successor than Invisible War. As for Mankind Divided, I haven't played it myself yet, but from what I hear it's more of the same but with some Publisher Meddling thrown into the mix: the game ends halfway through the storyline and comes with microtransactions that let you spend real money on one-use-only Praxis kits. Not cool for a single-player game, guys. Not cool.

:siren: This thread is rated A for All Spoilers Allowed. This means for Mankind Divided, too, since I'd have to be a hypocrite to not want to hear about a game I haven't played. I'd appreciate you guys keeping things focused on Human Revolution, however.

Also, recommendations are welcome. I have a great big list of titles and topics to go through, but there may be something else out there that I missed, plus if all y'all ask for the same thing that'll encourage me to move it up in the queue. I do have a few restrictions, though:
  • Non-cyberpunk and non-dystopian films are welcome, but only if they take a thoughtful look at an emerging field of technology.
  • Humans can't have colonized anything beyond the moon; past that it's too futuristic to tie in with Human Revolution.
  • Pre-apocalypse only. Dystopias may be worth an exception, but definitely not for cyberpunk or science stuff.
  • I'm not going to review an RPG setting or another video game.
  • There are some movies I've seen and don't want to see three more times to review. These include The Matrix Trilogy, Equilibrium, A.I., and The Bicentennial Man.

I would like to suggest a few minutes on what the Pangu story is about. The devs somehow forget what it's about and given who he was and that was awkward to listen to, despite the floof being a huge on the nose structure between Earth and the Heavens.

Suppose I'll get the obvious suggestions out of the way and say Inception and Ghost in the Shell (probably just the OVA, but they did release compilation movies of the first and second season of the TV show that are of okay quality, mostly what happens when you compress a 26 episode season into 2 hours, it also has a new voice cast).

One thing that is explored later on in this game and expounded upon in Mankind Divided is that Megan is a self-interested rear end in a top hat, she's just very good at hiding it. She had no qualms about using Adam for her own advancement and works for the bad guys with nary a second thought.

Bit disappointed you're not doing a no-kill run, but then again I could have recommended one when I saw what was happening in the last thread. Always curious about how to do the opening segment without killing, but it makes sense RP-wise to not bother.

Any particular reason why you're doing New Game +? Are there story changes, or do you just start with (apparently) some of the upgrades?

I really like Faridah by the way, although I'm not sure if there's one reason exactly or just a general "I like her".

And as to recommendations, I absolutely loved the novel Synners by Pat Cadigan, as well as her story Mindplayers. I imagine I'll love the rest of her stuff too, but it's been in my backlog for a while.

I'd like to think that even between his work and making the videos Bobbin would have enough time to watch the whole GitS series, even if it only emerges in later videos.

That being said, a Bobbin Threadbare lecture series would always be welcome, regardless of content (though I did get somewhat triggered when he referred to the Imperium as the Empire :shobon:).

Super excited for this LP. I only played this when it first came out, so I'm looking forward to seeing the changes in the Directors Cut version. Also I love the style of the outfits and decor. It's ...not practical at all, but way more interesting than sleek futuristic walls and jumpsuits.

Looking forward to your review of Hackers.

The way you do the opening in a no-kill run is you stay crouched at all times, you duck behind different tables as the goons mill around, and you run for it as soon as you're close enough to the exit door. Same as any other stealth run, really.

I'll explain what New Game + does at the start of the next video, so you'll understand then (assuming no one bothers explaining it before then).

Synners is already on my list.

Forgot to ask- will you be uploading videos at this time from now on? I ask because your LA Noire videos were usually uploaded in what are the wee hours in my part of the world, and so I usually had to wait until I got back from work to watch them. Right now though, it's kind of late, but they're hours I'm used to keeping (the video ended when I would've gone to bed more or less anyway).

Oh I'd have imagined there'd be a route out of sight to avoid them, or something.
That works too, patience is a virtue. Only ever played the base game once, so that will be interesting.

Same here, for some reason she just comes out as way more likeable than the rest of your supporting cast. Although I do like the development of grudging respect between Adam and Pritchard.

Not sure if it is within the theme here but I'd like to suggest The City & The City by Miéville. It's an interesting take on dystopia, although (huge book spoiler) technically not SF. It doesn't really deal with technology, but there are some themes relevant to HR, particularly with regards to opinion forming, making and forcing, rather like the Picus and whatshisname the psychologist bits in the game.
e: And hey, it's also about conspiracies and willful ignorance.

The Director's Cut thankfully fixes most of my niggling issues with the game (Like a lot of people, I was screwed during the bosses on my no kill run, and I'm sure we'll all have funny stories about those when we reach them), and it's nice to have the DLC integrated into the game... if only so my first aug every playthrough wasn't the drat inventory aug so I had room for stuff until I could sell the guns.

That said, I am disappointed to hear you're skipping Invisible War (One of these days, someone will give Invisible War the LP it deserves). I feel that game gets a bad rap when in truth I think it's really good. Besides, Deus Ex The Fall exists, so trying to tell me it's the worst game in the series is just laughable.

Anyway, on to the video. Still absolutely adore the intro sequence as a whole (I especially love that they got back Bob Page's VA), even if I feel the Half Life Hike (My nickname for that segment when Jensen and Megan are walking to the elevator) is becoming a tad Baby's First Game. But my jaw still drops at that credit sequence. Nice mix of Bond style coolness and the slowly growing sickening horror at what's happening to Adam.

One nice touch about Jensen- his beard is cut shorter in the prologue. Compare it to when he first appears after the augmentation, and he grows it out in the six month intern.

My usual update time is 11 am in my time zone, and unfortunately I don't really wake up consistently early enough to make it 9 am regularly. I was just excited to get things started today.

Hold button. Makes it easy to get to iron sights and jumping faster.

If we're going to go with dystopian sci fi, how about the Judge Dredd series/movies?

For a cyberpunk recommendation, I would suggest Hardwired by Walter John Williams. It was written a couple of years after Neuromancer and deals with classic cyberpunk themes, ie human/machine interface, shady corporations etc. A little bit more action oriented than Neuromancer (the film Damnation Alley was an obvious influence) but it is still a classic of the genre and still holds up pretty well today.

Robocop is such an obvious influence that I'm using it for my episode naming scheme. Three of the videos are going to be named after the three Prime Directives.

I'm a bit iffy on Judge Dredd since it's post-apocalyptic and not quite dystopian. It might make a late appearance, but I wouldn't count on it.

Man this reminds me I still need to replay the game with the Directors cut version. Been meaning to do that for... a couple of years now. :v:

I actually reread the Neuromancer trilogy not too long ago and the first book is still as good as I can remember it.
The others not so much I think and the ending for the trilogy just felt kind of :flaccid: and a bit of a cop out even if it was foreshadowed in the first book somewhat.

Still need to get reread the Bridge trilogy and Idoru at some point because after that point it felt like Gibson lost his spark somewhat and his writing became a lot more formalized. Pattern Recognition I can barely remember as anything special and I bought Spook Country but could never actually get myself to read it and now I'm pretty sure I just have it stored away somewhere else.

Also I'm somewhat with you on Shadowrun being Neuromancer + Magic but I would almost add that it takes the concept and it's themes to 11 because while the Bunraku dolls in SR are a clear influence for what Rose Kolodny went through it's also that whole concept made nastier and darker. Which is a thing SR does to almost its detriment at times I'd say.

None of the LPs of this game on the forums thus far have focused too much on stealth, is that something you might do in this one Bobbin?

Time travel, biological weapons, and an apocalypse. It's a good movie, but it doesn't have much in common with HR beyond the genre label.

I reserve the right to modify the terms of engagement as the situation warrants. In other words, I plan to go with stealth and assault in different situations in order to show off as much of the game as possible. But just for reference, you're going to see me take the Thief approach in the first mission.

Oh hell yeah, I loved your playthrough of DX1, and I love the absolute poo poo out of Human Revolution. It'll be interesting to see you go through it if you're not going full stealth, because despite getting Platinum on both the regular and director's cut version, and in Mankind Divided, I haven't killed a person in either game that wasn't mandatory or didn't have a trophy associated with it.

Not to say there weren't a ton of horribly maimed individuals, because Jensen's melee is brutal.

Oh yeah, I'm not asking just for the sake of seeing stealth so much as to see extra conversations, see hidden things, find alternate routes, and so on.

My basic MO after the game's halfway point is try to sneak as much as I can, but if someone finds me then it's not like I'm not going to use the revolver with armor-piercing explosive rounds, or the plasma rifle for that matter. Panchea was a bloodbath and I just added to it :black101:.

I stealth everything and got the Pacifist achievement on my first run of Mankind Divided... albeit with a lot of save-scumming, because holy drat the AI is arbitrary at times in both HR and MD :v:

Just noticed this referencing Philip Riley Mead as governor of Florida during HuRev. He's referenced as President during the events of the first Deus Ex. There was even a model made up for him, for a White House level that never made it into the game.

Speaking of Neuromancer, if you haven't read it, I definitely suggest the audiobook version, I think it's Arthur Addison doing the narration. It's abridged, unfortunately, but it's an amazing rendition, and super well done. It's kind of hard to find, but here's the opening part at least. Definitely worth tracking down if you can.

Bobbin, a suggestion then: Max Headroom. The Movie, not the TV series (as it'll be easier to parse).

I've always taken the stealth focused route through this game (with a brief combat interlude because Malik). I need to find time at some point to do a proper heavy weapons assault run.

I recall having to basically hoard PEPS throughout the entire playthrough to get Malik saved in a non-lethal run. Not fun :v:

That was something I was really disappointed with in Mankind Divided, that Jensen's takedowns felt so... weak compared to HR.

In regards to the microtransactions of Mankind Divided, if Jim Sterling is to be believed, it was something literally added in in the last two weeks of development--the Devs had to stop polishing the game and add in microtransactions.

As for suggestions, ah, Snatcher could work.
