GBS is back and that's great because it's the coolest place to talk about cool movies. We're just regular cool dudes who aren't mega-nerds who argue about the symbolism of Batman breaking some fools rear end open for stealing a diamond. :coal:

So what films have you seen lately?

I tried to watch Suicide Squad but it was a bit poo poo and felt like an Anime Muisc Video on Youtube circa 2004. Buck Cherry's "Crazy bitch" plays as Harley Quinn dances around then stops abruptly as The Doors plays as they show a pair of doors opening. Dumb as poo poo and the fighting was pretty stiff and boring too. Harley & Joker were ok though I guess.

The Neon Demon was alright but the music was great so it gets a higher score for that.

So how about you, new GBS? What films have you seen lately?

The Purge films are weird because it's a great premise but none of the films do anything with it. JUST MAKE THE WARRIORS ya dum-dums.

Also kinda excited for the IT remake because the old film wasn't even really a film was it? I haven't seen that in about 15 years and kinda don't want to because I'm pretty sure the only good thing about it is Tim Curry and I don't want to sully my memory of the film.

Remakes can be alright if handled well.

Saw Europa Report for the first time a while ago, it was extremely good but could have used a bigger budget. I imagine its how the first SpaceX Mars mission will go.

Yeah it was a miniseries like The Stand and it does not hold up. I'm hoping the new one focuses less on Pennywise and more on the other forms It takes because it's just such a scary concept, it is your worst fear no matter what that may be.

i watched John Wick b/c a goon said it was good and they were right

movie delivered on what you want out of it. get the love interest out of the way before it starts. little setup then blam blam blam. head russian guy was cool. some parts were dumb like they took it from a comic book or something, kind of... stylized without a real justification, i guess... but overall great movie. i give it 4.5 out of 5.042 stars

edit: oh yea the new car they give him near the end is just so amazingly ugly compared to the old one. what the hell, detroit

Kubo and the Two Strings was a pretty good movie, it's a shame that it did so poorly in theaters. My kindergartener loved it and I never fail to be impressed by the technical aspects of Laika movies.

Suicide Squad was a dumpster fire and yet people, including people on these very forums, are still talking about how great it is. I can only conclude that a majority of the moviegoing population is also a dumpster fire.

wife and I have been catching up on all the summer blockbusters now that they're available for streaming like star trek, ghostbusters, superman batman, capt america, ID2 etc and they all range from meh to terrible so far, that doggerel about all the writing talent leaving film for TV seems to be true

RE the IT remake, it's annoying that they're making pennywise look all scary and poo poo. The original idea was that he was actually sincerely trying to trick children by initially looking appealing. I guess I don't know what form he'd take for today's children though, maybe they could hear the faint sounds of a minecraft stream wafting up from out of the storm drain

ID2 felt like they where repacking the story of ID for the international audience. (China especially). It was the same poo poo almost beat for beat.

Ignore that she looks like some one hit random in the Sim character creator but I like this youtube personality explanation of the whole reboot/remakes in the past couple of years: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hOttfoJ4ygU

Basically: Americans are not going to movies as much (waiting for home release) and more foreign markets are opening up. Why avoid making a reboot/sequel when the new audience never even saw the original?

I do like that mid range R rated comedy/action is making a comeback.

The Blair Witch soft reboot was a pile of rear end. The whole thing about the original was about how you never saw the actual witch and it was about people slowly losing their minds. But guess that's too subtle for today's crowd. Lets see the witch, lets have spectacular special effects because why not?

Also I saw Jack Reacher, but I'll be damned if I actually remember the movie aside from the ending and Tom Cruise looking old.

31 was okay, but watching it in the same YEAR as Green Room, it just doesn't hold up. Green Room did have a staggering lack of clown Hitler murder midgets though, which I didn't really notice until I rewatched it just after 31.

I watched Forsaken last night. A western staring Donald and Kiefer Sutherland? Sure, why not. Spoiler just in case you have never watched a western movie.

Wow, this was the most generic western I've ever seen. Land baron comes in wants to buy up all the farms because the railroad is coming through but nobody wants to sell so he has no recourse other than hire a band of rough necks. Kiefer a gunslinger for the last ten years trying to change his ways comes back to his pa who is a minister, tries his hardest to become a normal person but ultimately fails because he has to kill all the bad guys and has to leave town Shane style because people will have heard about what he's done and come looking for him in order to make a name .

I could be wrong but I'm HOPING they just made him look like a spooky, scary clown because it's a promo picture and the average idiot wouldn't get that he eats kids if he wasn't looking super spooky and eeeeevil.

My friend made me watch The Babadook the last time we hung out because he knows I'm terrible with psychological horror movies. When The Babadook appears in the mom's room and all of the sudden shoots out at her, I jumped off the couch and fell on the floor and my friend laughed at me so hard he cried.

Then we watched the live action Scooby-Doo movie and it was so bad we turned it off and watched Jackass 2 instead.

I don't think so, I watched the first one. Only I was drunk off my rear end so that's probably why I don't remember anything of it. Probably will give it a rewatch later. I'm listening to the audiobook version of Never Go Back and its pretty sweet.

The dark irony about Kubo not doing well is that the biggest reason to see it--the exceptional animation--is best appreciated in a theater, and now that Kubo has done poorly it's never going to come back to theaters. So many people are going to miss out on seeing that leaf-ship fight in giant format.

I just saw The Hitcher with Rutger Hauer. Pretty decent movie in that it doesn't play around and gets right to the psychopath stuff within the first 10 minutes. Then the structure and pacing get funky though, and while it's enjoyable it's more because of how ragged and lopsided everything is than because of legitimate tension.
