I drove a Ford freestyle for a long time as a man and it was actually pretty nice. Enough space to go camping, got OK mileage (avg 25, up to 30 on long interstate trips)

^^ Ehhhhhh, Honda's are sub-par in almost every way now and have been since the death of the S2000. They're costlier than their Ford and Chevy counter parts with worse standard features/options and less reliable than their Korean competition. Have you looked at the CX-5 if you're determined to get a crossover? It's probably not the Mazda you should buy but it's still *a* Mazda you could buy, so doubtless would be the better choice.
