Epic High Five posted:also if you think that's troubling, read the piece washpo did on Dylan Roof's world This and that other wapo article about the trump supporter are pretty depressing. These people's economic situation is not much different than what many inner city people (read: minorities) are also going through. There are very few low skill jobs left that pay a living wage. And now you have businesses salivating at the thought of automating what little ones are left. Self-driving trucks are going to put literal millions out of work. This is something that neither party is addressing. I don't think education is the answer at all. Not everyone is fit for college and there is no guarantee that the market for whatever degree they choose won't go to poo poo by the time they put in their 4-5 years into college (like what happened to my best friend). And plus, what about the people who are already in their late twenties, thirties and up? Even if these people were to go back to college they'd be competing with hordes of new grads for those same jobs. It's not hard to understand where their feeling hopelessness comes from.

More reporting about possible violence following a Trump loss quote:“If she’s in office, I hope we can start a coup. She should be in prison or shot. That’s how I feel about it,” Dan Bowman, a 50-year-old contractor, said of Hillary Clinton, the Democratic nominee. “We’re going to have a revolution and take them out of office if that’s what it takes. There’s going to be a lot of bloodshed. But that’s what it’s going to take. . . . I would do whatever I can for my country.” quote:Trump said to watch you precincts. I’m going to go, for sure,” said Steve Webb, a 61-year-old carpenter from Fairfield, Ohio. http://www.bostonglobe.com/news/pol...UdsM/story.html This is something I've been noticing a lot more on social media. Trump supporters seem to relish in the fact that a growing number of people are scared about what could happen after the election, scared of trump supporters. It's getting harder and harder to pin all this to "economic anxiety".

Dead Cosmonaut posted:Mark Blyth on the rise of Global Trumpisms and Donald Trump It's worth the watch. I just finished listening to this and tbh we're probably hosed. Trump isn't going to win this election but some clown who styled himself after him could win in the future. I don't see Hillary taking the steps necessary to push back this wave of fascism/nationalism, and even if she tried she'd just get blocked by Rs in congress and the house.

Penisaurus Sex posted:The idea that everyone who votes for Trump is racist and old and we don't have any responsibility to address their grievances until they all die is loving everywhere I look and is not really a good way to think about things going forward. Mark Blyth spoke a lot about this in the talk I quoted. It's true that there are a ton of real deplorables who back Trump solely due to racism, but there are also a whole lot of people who feel left behind by globalism and feel like they have no control over their economic situation and could easily lose their financial status.

Martha Stewart Undying posted:Economic anxiety isn’t driving racial resentment. Racial resentment is driving economic anxiety. Thanks just read through it. And just to verify, this has been my initial view ever since Trump became an actual thing this year. I've just been trying to understand and maybe see if there is some other explanation besides racism for his rise to popularity, but I admit it looks more and more likely that it really is just racism. I'm not really sure what can be done about it though. The GOP has spent a long time and a whole lot of money demonizing us minorities. These people drank the GOP's kool-aid for so long that any type of addressing the issue is met with massive pushback and claims of global liberal/jewish/gay/communist/socialist/msm agendas. I can only see the country getting more divided and fascism not going away after trump

Trump doesn't even have a campaign beyond deport the mexicans, ban muslims and stop and frisk people like me nationwide. You maybe could hide behind the "b-but small businesses" back when Mitt Romney was running but trump doesn't even have that. There is no benefit of the doubt if you're still willing to vote for trump at this stage in the race.
