The people who would be influenced by the debate to finally come off the fence are people who would come around to one side or the other before the election, whether it was the previous debate, or one of the ones coming up, or some random news story.

It was a draw in a tactical sense, and it's likely that it was always going to be that way unless one side or the other really implodes.

However, I'd call it a minor strategic victory for Hillary, in that she's winning now and it won't do anything other than eat up a couple news cycles that Trump could (at least in theory) otherwise use to swing the race in his favor.

I have a theory that a lot of what Kaine said was designed to bait Trump himself, as it was announced that he would be live tweeting during the debate. I have to check and see if he tweeted anything especially egregious.

I don't think you're far off. There was certainly some of that, but I think a bunch of it was also designed to be attack ad material.

Each time he brought up the reprehensible poo poo that Trump has done or said, he put Pence in a position to either deny it (in which case the ad is Pence looking like a stooge denying what they can play a clip of Trump saying) or defend it (in which case the ad is an attack on both of them for said reprehensible poo poo). Pence did a remarkably good job of bobbing and weaving as much as he could on those questions, but I think Hillary's media team is gonna be able to carve out some juicy stuff when all is said and done.

Yeah, while I think that Pence came off looking better on camera, the story going forward is going to be about him denying things which there are video records of. This was definitely a win for Clinton's long game.

Pence didn't throw himself into 2020 anything. He supported Trump and the insanity that came with it. After this year Republicans will want to nuke this year from orbit, and Pence is a part of that.

People are saying that this election will be the end of the GOP. I'm not sure I believe that, though. I think that Trump will make any republican presidential candidate going forward look that much better by comparison.

EDIT: I'm durping. Of course it's not the end of the republican party. They'll still control congress and the majority of state houses. Sorry.
