Also, according to the debate Pence is running with some guy named "Donald Trump" who is definitely not the one everyone else has been seeing. So whatever the reaction to this debate I can't imagine it will have any staying power.

The people who would be influenced by the debate to finally come off the fence are people who would come around to one side or the other before the election, whether it was the previous debate, or one of the ones coming up, or some random news story.

It was a draw in a tactical sense, and it's likely that it was always going to be that way unless one side or the other really implodes.

However, I'd call it a minor strategic victory for Hillary, in that she's winning now and it won't do anything other than eat up a couple news cycles that Trump could (at least in theory) otherwise use to swing the race in his favor.

I thought Pence did great if he is going to run for president in 2020 and I thought Kaine did great at giving the news clips and soundbites of things trump said that Pence denied that Trump said

It was a good and fair fight, harkening back to Lincoln/Douglas. Both got some good points in, made well-reasoned cases for themselves and their candidates, but in the end ... uhh.... USA USA USA USA!

So far, the reactions seem to range from "it's a wash" to "Pence won, but at the cost of Trump", though.

Pence won first half because of all the crosstalk and he sounded more prepared, but the last 20 minutes he really struggled to address specific charges about Donald Trump, and those failures are soundbite-friendly.

So nothing matters.

The first 2/3rds of the debate were approximately:

Kaine: How can you defend these horrible things that Donald Trump said?

Pence: Trump? I don't know anyone named Trump, do any of you guys know what he's talking about? Now, about tax cuts...

Initial coverage is surprisingly noncommittal. By this same point, there were already a couple of stories talking about how Trump lost the first debate. I'm actually guessing that the media will play this off as a draw.

Nightmare scenario: Pence gets praised for debate performance, Trump deliberately blows next two debates, quits the race, and Pence wins on a tidal wave of ignorance having never directly debated Hillary.

Problem: this would require people to know who Mike Pence is

The thing about Pence winning is that, well, the win hinges on the feeling that he actually made his campaign appear to not poo poo the bed at any prolonged event and that's why it feels like he won.

But tomorrow is another day

of Trump!!

so that's another briar patch situation just like Machado would have still been even had Donald not poo poo down his leg for the 88 minutes beforehand.

Realtalk:

It was a tie, in that each side can act like their own guy won.

Kaine, in that strategically this won't stop the bleeding of Trump's campaign.

Pence, in that he distanced himself from Trump by creating an imaginary version that acts like a real human being and agreeing with it.
