Jon Bohnam: When the Levee Breaks

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fOEQTJV_3-w

Drums are just a flinch after the beat, but perfectly so on every beat, the result is an immeasurably heavy sound, the regularity and lag of blues strewn thick

This space between real beat and enunciated makes room for everyone else in the band to fill

Deviation on its own is not interesting until you can see the pattern from which it deviates

Oscar Peterson C Jam Blues:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NTJhHn-TuDY

fucks the beat like Bonham, but all three players are moving across the line -- piano is behind and bass is ahead and drums are on and as piano shifts to on the bass moves behind and the drums go ahead, each on the point of an equilateral triangle that spins around the true beat, with enough space to answer their own human inputs they hear and see of eachother, etc, for the duration, in an organization of human feeling that makes you forget about the technical mastery underneath.

Yeah I got some input on that as well somewhere along the way

I think the deal was they were recording in a house and they put the drumkit on the ground floor of this large three story spiral staircase and the microphones at the top of the staircase to give that distance and organic bashing to the drums by the time they bounced up to the mics

It's some real good drumming

If you listen closely, between notes on Levee you can hear Bonham drinking heavily.
