For Honor is a medieval hack n' slash set to be released on Feb 14th, 2017, so cancel those Valentine's Day plans! Ha, just kidding, goons. But seriously, I know you'll find someone special soon!
You can play as a hero from three different factions: The Legion (knights), The Chosen (samurai), and The Warborn (vikings). Each faction has four classes: Vanguard, Assassin, Heavy, and Hybrid, so the game will launch with 12 playable characters. Your opponents will repeatedly and effortlessly murder you with all sorts of cool, class-specific weapons, since each of these twelve classes wields something unique.
As you... well not you per se, rather players that are good, perform certain actions they'll gain Feats which let them buff their stats, heal themselves, call in a barrage of arrows, catapult attacks, and all sorts of other broken bullshit. A tactical combat system, known as "Art of Battle", is initiated when you encounter other players even if all you really want to do is be friends. You'll enter a dueling mode in which you'll haplessly mash the buttons until you are dead, or you can choose how to place and position your weapons from three directions when attacking your enemies. By observing on-screen hints and the movements of your opponents, which reflect their respective attacking position, you can target their weak points and totally pwn them, or block, counter, etc. Each class also has other special abilities, such as barging into enemies with their shoulder and performing back-stepping swipes. The strength of each attack can also be decided by players. The system aims at allowing players to "feel the weight of the weapon in [their] hand."
In addition to a single player campaign, For Honor will also feature a multiplayer mode with game types such as:
- Dominion
quote:4v4 objective-based mode in which two teams of four players supported by AI troops fight for three different zones for the control of the battlefield.
Skills, communication, and team tactics are essential. Each match ends with a breaking phase where one team needs to wipe out all of the players on the other team to win the game. Dominion includes feats.
To score points:
Capture control zones = 100 soft points per zone (will be lost if enemy team captures back a zone), plus hard points (can't be lost) over time when controlled.
Kill enemy heroes = hard points.
Kill enemy soldiers = hard points.
Victory conditions:
Reach 1,000 points to break the morale of the enemy.
When the enemy team is breaking, they can't respawn anymore.
To win the game, kill all remaining enemy heroes.
If a team that is breaking manages to bring the score of the enemy team below 1,000 points, the team rallies and all players respawn.
- Brawl
quote:Best of five rounds 2v2 mode.
Each team of two players needs to kill the enemy heroes to win a round. Brawl does not feature AI. This mode is all about skills, awareness, and cooperation. A player’s ability to use the environment to their advantage will make the difference.
There are no feats or boosts in Brawl.
Victory conditions:
Kill both enemy players to win a round.
Win three rounds to win a game.
- Duel
quote:Best of five rounds 1v1 mode.
Two heroes face off in a fight to the death.
Skill is fundamental in Duel, of course, and players can use the environment to their advantage.
There are no feats or boosts in Duel.
Victory conditions:
Kill the enemy player to win a round.
Win three rounds to win a game.
- Skirmish
quote:4v4 team deathmatch-like mode with AI. Combat skills are key in this mode, as players score points for their team by killing enemy heroes.
The conditions of the fight impacts the scoring (e.g., more points for revenge kill, more points for kills in 1v1, less points for kills in 2v1, 3v1, etc). Like Dominion, each match ends with a breaking phase.
Skirmish includes feats and boosts.
To make points:
Kill enemy heroes.
Kill enemy soldiers.
Kill enemy captains.
Victory Conditions:
Reach 1,000 points to break the morale of the enemy.
When the enemy team is breaking, they can no longer respawn.
To win the game, kill all remaining enemy heroes.
- Elimination
quote:Best of five rounds in 4v4 mode.
There is no respawn.
Since there is only one life per round, each fight matters.
The last hero to survive on the battlefield wins the round for their team. Elimination includes feats and boosts.
Victory Conditions:
Kill all heroes of the enemy team to win a round.
Win three rounds to win a game.
What is Elimination mode?
Elimination is a fast-paced multiplayer mode that pits two teams of four players against each other, as well as a few AI characters – Captains and Soldiers. Each elimination match is a best-of-five-rounds battle where each player has only one life per round, and the last one to survive wins the round for their team. Since there is no respawn, the outcome of each fight can make a major difference in the round.
What makes Elimination mode different?
Boosts are the key component that make Elimination mode different than other modes. Boosts bring temporary advantages to heroes, such as improved attack or defense, increased movement speed, or the immediate unlock of the Level 4 feat. Boosts are scattered across the map. When a player finds a boost, they just need to stay on it for a few seconds for the boost to be activated. Boosts can really make a difference in the battle, so they create strong points of interest on the map that players fight over. Another important element is using your revive, as it’s the only way to bring back a teammate that has been killed.
Any tips on how to come out on top in Elimination?
As in our other team-based modes, communication and coordination are key to getting the upper hand in an elimination match. There are many different possible tactics, from each player dueling against a direct opponent to teams syncing their efforts to outnumber the opposition. But the one-life-per-round rule creates an immediate tension that leads to a different experience than in Dominion or Skirmish.

FACTIONS AND THEIR HEROES
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=STIT5j6UmeU
The Knights of Ashfeld are brash paragons of might.
They were sent by the Iron Legions to pacify the land. They’ve since acquired a taste for freedom and have made Ashfeld their home. They believe that many – if not all – of the ancient ruins that cover their lands were built by the Great Empire, the precursor of the Iron Legion.
Disorganized for centuries, Ashfeld’s Knights have mostly been a collection of petty warlords and roving bands of mercenary knights. In the last decade, they have been corralled under a single banner, often at sword point, by Ashfeld’s Blackstone Legion, led by Apollyon.
So far, the Knights have managed to defend Ashfeld from Vikings and Samurai attacks. Apollyon argues that a threat of war is imminent and tells stragglers that joining her Legion is the only guarantee they will hold onto their lands.
- The Peacekeepers - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kqvpEYWkpgs
quote:Peacekeepers are quick, lethal, and can win a fight before their enemy even knows they are there. It takes a special type of warrior to be a silent blade. Theirs is not a legacy of glory. They are an instrument of death, wielded to turn the tides of war. You may never see them. But you will feel the difference they make and trail they leave behind.
Peacekeepers are fast, maneuverable, and deadly. They use their dagger to inflict Bleed Damage to their opponents. Their limited range is compensated by high mobility to counter enemies or back away to safety.
DIFFICULTY: MEDIUM
COUNTER-ATTACKER FIGHTING STYLE
SHORT RANGE BUT HIGH MOBILITY
Special Capabilities
VERY FAST ATTACKS
USE DAGGER TO CANCEL OR CONFIRM ATTACKS INTO BLEED DAMAGE
DEFLECT ABILITY
Weapon: Sword and dagger. The combination of the sword and dagger give the wielder deadly counter-attacking ability. What the dagger lacks in damage, it makes up for in speed and versatility.

- The Wardens - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HhpbCuBp12k
quote:The Wardens are powerful, noble warriors dedicated to the defense of their land and their people. Striking a balance between defense and offense, wardens wear partial plate armor with chainmail and leather. Wardens wield massive two-handed longswords for slashing enemies and blocking attacks. Trained to be proud, loyal, and brilliant diplomats, the Wardens are expected to embody the highest values of Knighthood. Many set out to achieve this, few do.
Wardens are jack-of-all-trade knights who roam the battlefield with their impressive longswords. They balance defense and offense and are easy to play. They make great choices for new players as they feature a large range of basic abilities.
DIFFICULTY: EASY
ADAPTABLE FIGHTING STYLE
STRAIGHT-FORWARD STRATEGY

Guide to the Warden + Advanced Mechanics
- The Conquerers - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YjD2TIPTJu0
quote:Conquerors are ex-prisoners and forced conscripts who have risen to the rank of elite soldier. Originally pressed into military service as sword fodder, those who are skilled enough to survive are promoted out of the rank and file and given heavy infantry training. They are heavily armored warriors, relying on a defensive style and their massive flails to whittle away at their opponent’s stamina until they fall under the Conquerors’ massive onslaught. Climbing from the lowest ranked to this prestigious role in the Knight’s forces, Conquerors have earned the respect of their peers through determination and feats of arms.

- The Lawbringers - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9XqxKziXvoI
quote:The Lawbringers are the justice in Ashfeld. They enforce the laws and dispense punishment. Their armor is without equal. Their weapon is a grim reminder of the ultimate punishment for lawlessness. They will go wherever they are needed – pray that you are on the right side when they arrive.
The Lawbringer combines the features of a Heavy and a Vanguard Hero. Strong but extremely effective at counter-attacking.
DIFFICULTY: HARD
EXCELLENT COUNTER-ATTACKER
GOOD AT DISABLING ENEMIES
Special Capabilities
ATTACKS CAN CAUSE STUN
KEEPS ENEMIES OFF-BALANCE
Weapon: Poleaxe. The poleaxe is one of the most versatile weapons ever made. The axe has a sharp end for slashing and a blunt end for bashing and the spike on top makes it perfect for a thrusting attack.
History has not been kind to The Samurai.
Originally from a land far away across the seas, they tell a tale of an Emperor and a homeland lost to sea and fire. Nearly a millennium later, the nomadic nation has ceased its wandering and built a new empire near the reclaimed homelands of the Vikings and the contested lands of the Knights.
Having spent the last decades acclimating to the marshy hills known as the Myre, they flourish but remain vastly outnumbered by their neighbors. They have to rely on greater martial skill, cunning, and devotion to their culture in order to survive – for they may be the last of their kind.
- The Orochi - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lj81Bv7E_yY
quote:The Orochi are the Imperial assassins of the Samurai. They roam the battlefield like ghosts, terrorizing and slaughtering those unfortunate enough to cross their path. Lightly armored and trained in the arts of stealth and deception, the Orochi dispatches enemies with a katana. Usually loyal beyond reproach, the Orochi holds the darker samurai secrets of dealing death in myriad ways, from throwing deadly knives to using a poisoned blade.
Orochi are very agile katana-wielding samurai. They offer a good mix of harassment and counter-attack abilities but require skill and timing to have an effective defense.

Guide to the Orochi
- The Kensei - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7uniz_svSSQ
quote:Kensei are the living incarnations of Bushidō, the samurai way of the warrior, or as close as one can get. Masters of multiple martial arts, they are trained from infancy to fight and die for their emperor or their fellow samurai without asking why. Kensei wear heavy armor and fight with the nodachi, a longer version of the katana that cleaves enemies in a few elegant and powerful strikes. Kensei spend their lives fighting and training as they strive to attain a level of perfection few other warriors can ever hope to achieve.

Guide to the Kensei
- The Shugoki - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WKKYYz6-QEQ
quote:Shugoki appear slow and cumbersome. Don’t let that fool you -- they possess the strength of a demon and an unbreakable will. It takes incredible fortitude to be the guardians of your people. You must defend them at all costs and put their needs above your own. This has never been an issue for the Shugoki. Their weapon of choice seems unwieldy. But in their hands, it is as deadly and precise as any blade.
The Shugokis are the disruptor Tank. They absorb a lot of hits thanks their high health and passive uninterruptible stance which allows a bit more freedom while attacking. He's excellent at dealing with crowds with his massive kanabo, but he's very slow, both in movement and attack.

DISABLER FIGHTING STYLE
HARD HITTER
Special Capabilities

- The Nobushi - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YFKI7zmNQbg
quote:The Nobushi are the defenders of the villages too far from the Imperial City for the army to reach. They are elegant fighters with a curious weapon. They have the lightest armor that allows them to move like the wind but cannot take a lot of damage. But don’t let their appearance fool you, they are one of the most effective fighters the Samurai have.
The Nobushi is a Zone Character. She tries to keep her distance while constantly annoying any attackers.
DIFFICULTY: HARD

Guide to the Nobushi
The Vikings vanished centuries ago, fleeing their crumbling homelands for shores unknown.
Those left behind were conquered by the Knights and assimilated into their cultures.
The Vikings returned in great numbers a few centuries ago. They came from far across the sea to where they have established a new homeland. They retuned for many reasons, but mostly to reclaim their ancient homeland in the North: Valkeinheim. Hundreds of Viking clans now coexist in relative peace in the frozen tundra. To the outside observer, however, they seem to exist in a state of perpetual civil war.
Vikings are the undisputed masters of the sea and fresh water. When this raucous nation gathers together in massive armadas of dragon-headed ships, they are fearsome to behold and nigh unstoppable.
- The Berserkers - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ajp5DwmIW_g
quote:Berserkers are chaotic and brutal dual-axe-wielding Vikings. Their savage love of combat strikes fear into the hearts of most, friend and foe alike. The Berserker fights relentlessly, capable of vanquishing foes before they can mount a decent defense. Unconcerned with their personal safety, they care little for their own defense, focusing instead on killing as many enemies as they can.
Berserkers are intimidating Viking engines of death. They combine close-combat harassing abilities and have infinite chain attacks that can be initiated many different ways.
DIFFICULTY: HARD
HARASSER FIGHTING STYLE
SHORT-RANGE FAST ATTACKS
Special Capabilities
SOME ATTACKS CAN HIT MULTIPLE TARGETS IN A ROW
CHARGING ATTACKS THAT HARASS OPPONENTS
DEFLECT ABILITY
Weapon: Dual Viking Hand Axes. The Viking have turned a common tool into a vicious, highly effective weapon. The hand axe combines speed of handling with the balance required for accurate throwing over short ranges. Their lethality in the hands of blood-crazed Berserkers is legendary.
Guide to the Berserker
- The Raiders - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X0mpJTwboOo
quote:Fighting with heavy two-handed axes, Raiders are always found at the forefront of the Viking horde, hacking through enemies crazy enough to stand in their way. They are clad in leather and iron rings, with their bodies covered by tattoos – souvenirs from past battles, which they bear proudly. These relentless warriors embody the Viking ideals: boundless bravery, spotless integrity, and unbridled passion. They know the moment of their death has already been chosen upon birth, so no Viking fears to follow their destiny. Of course, they all intend to bring as many foes with them as they can.
Raiders are the Viking’s archetypal warriors. They wade through battles with a large Dane axe, dishing out several disabling attacks and dealing high damage.
DIFFICULTY: EASY
DISABLING FIGHTING STYLE
HIGH-DAMAGE ATTACKS
Special Capabilities
UNBLOCKABLE ZONE ATTACK USEABLE IN ALL CHAIN ATTACKS
STUN ATTACKS AND THROWS
STRONG, VERSATILE THROW ATTACKS
Weapon: Long Axe. Long axes have massive heads mounted on long, polished wooden handles. It is one of the most reecognizable and fearsome weapons of the Viking. It doubles as a deadly weapon of war and a tool to smash through whatever stands in the way between raiders and the loot they seek.
Guide to the Raider
- The Warlords - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NpJ5RvXXSuk
quote:Warlords are not born into leadership. They’ve had to earn it through blood, sweat and steel. To be a Warlord means a life of service to their people. Their shield protects those who cannot fight -- their sword will cut down those who would attempt to cause their people harm. Their fighting style is simple yet brutal. You will always find them leading the charge.
Slow and strong, Warlords are great counter attackers who hit hard and sustain a lot of damage. Their attacks have limited range but they offer defensive properties that make them perfect tools to counter incoming attacks or trade blows with the enemy.
DIFFICULTY: MEDIUM
COUNTER-ATTACKER FIGHTING STYLE
SHORT RANGE
Special Capabilities
DEFENSIVE PROPERTIES ON LIGHT AND HEAVY ATTACKS
DEFENSIVE MODE
UNBLOCKABLE HEADBUTT
Weapon: Gladius and Shield. The Gladius, paired with a sturdy shield, allows the wielder to deflect blows and get close enough to their target to unleash deadly close range attacks.
Guide to the Warlord
- The Valkyrie - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LogAtInaFAM
quote:The Valkyries have made a deal with the gods. They will fight and earn glory so that those who can’t will be counted in the halls of Valhalla. They are scouts and trackers who use their spears and shields to deadly effect. They are chosen by the gods -- hope you never encounter one on the battlefield.
The Valkyrie is versatile and complex. She is a very adaptable Hero and very good at keeping the enemy off-balance.
DIFFICULTY: MEDIUM
KEEPS ENEMIES AT BAY
COMPLEX COMBOS
Special Capabilities
EXCELLENT AT TAKEDOWNS
CAN USE SHIELD TO ATTACK
Weapon: Spear and shield. The spear is a simple weapon: a sharpened metal point at the end of a wooden shaft. The shield is small and gives little protection. But put them in the hands of a Valkyrie and they are a deadly combo! An attack can come from either, and an enemy can find themselves on their back if they are too slow.

MAPS
- Citadel Gate - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ahp0Xg6RdI
quote:
Citadel Gates are fortresses that guard some the world’s largest cities. With external barracks and archer positions, they provide a solid defense to the tens of thousands of civilians inside.
Most of these massive fortifications were built at the time of the Great Empire to protect immense population centers. They show unmistakable Knight cultural influences and many were reclaimed by the Iron Legion as theirs by ancestral right, regardless of which faction occupied it.
- Overwatch - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tvBkPt8FXq8
quote:
These cliff-side fortresses oversee large open areas featuring several catapult and ballista batteries.
They were built on cliffs that overlooked expansive tracts of strategically valuable open lands. They provide defense with heavy siege-engine barrage. A fortress features an outer perimeter where the bulk of the structure’s defenses are located and an inner perimeter where several catapult and ballista batteries operate.
- River Fort - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NknSeEt-Kx4
quote:
River forts protect lands from ship-based invasion. Equipped with powerful catapults, they sink hostile vessels before they get too close.
The fort is a typical fortification of Viking origin found on northern rivers where they’ve established colonies. They’re usually built by fortifying a riverside fishing village into a fully-fledged siege engine battery. The soldiers manning the catapults are highly trained specialists adept at sinking ships.
And many more! Check out the rest of the maps on Ubi's website since I'm too lazy to add the remaining 11 maps.
