The Frank Grimes episode is great because it's the most self aware episode of television ever made.

Hey Matt.

Serious post: the episode where Homer becomes a missionary on a tropical island to get away from a PBS pledge drive gone wrong.

As the years went on The Simpsons got in to the habit of having the first act be wild crazy antics that eventually leads to a tangent that becomes the main conflict for the last two acts. This structure works GREAT for some episodes [the candy convention with the gummy Venus de Milo comes to mind], but the writers got accustomed to this structure and started using it FOR EVERY SINGLE EPISODE. This was the first time I really noticed how incongruous the first act feels when compared to the latter parts of the episode.

There's some good stuff in this episode. Betty White is in it. Homer ends up bringing gambling and alcohol to the islanders. The first instance, to my knowledge, of "JEEBUS". "I'm NOT NOT licking toads." The episode ends with a volcanic eruption that threatens to kill everyone on the island. IT IS NEVER RESOLVED [You may be inclined to consider this a strike against the episode; I think it's great].

All in all, when I was a dumb teenager and saw this episode I thought something was wrong. As a dumb adult I think the first act is under-developed and the writers couldn't figure out what they wanted to say with the Homer as Missionary scenario. Which is too bad, because Homer's behavior in this episode speaks greatly to what is wrong with real-life proselytizing Christians who go to these developing countries and tell people that all their problems will be solved by submitting to the ONE, TRUE, CHRISTIAN, AMERICAN GOD.

If they had gotten to the island sooner and found a way to tighten up the plot of the second half, this episode could have been right up there with the Movementarians show. Instead, it's just another mediocre season eleven episode.

Comedy option: Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire, The PTA Disbands

The one with Kim Bassinger and one of the Baldwins. That was probably the first point where it was first stars for the sake of guest stars.

There were some good episodes afterwards but that was the beginning of the end.

It's the jockey episode. I couldn't believe what I was watching. That was the first episode that veered right into unbelievable Family Guy fantasy and before you know it Bart and Principal Skinner are fighting atop a school bus as it smashes through walls.

I had totally forgotten this actually happens. I caught this episode on a re-run a couple months back and I couldn't believe my eyes. :stonk:

Fake edit: If I remember correctly this episode aired right around the time Family Guy was just starting out. Seems totally in line with something they'd do.

Nothing in Jurassic World is natural, we have always filled gaps in the genome with the DNA of other animals. And if the genetic code was pure, many of them would look quite different. But you didn't ask for reality, you asked for more teeth.
