I went to take the dog out for his nightly piss and saw a massive box with all this inside:

and this

What's this?

OK

It's a PEN

With USB!

Let's open the one '4' kids. My wife decided to open this one instead of our son because

OMG

First the bag:

But wtf is this monitor cable?

Ok, also in the bag was this awesome watch:

But I can't use this sun system with just these cables... unless

I have no idea what this thing is, or how to power it but I'll see what I can do

edit: looks like nothing cause I suck at soldering

More info here: http://oldcomputers.net/kaypro2000.html

And finally, whatever the hell is in this bag....

My wife, upon me opening it, went full price is right jumping up and down because....

it goes on like that for about 4 minutes until...

then I tried loading something and

But it rebooted fine so I started looking around

More pics

I'll likely take all this stuff with me to work (since my place is so tiny I have no room for it here, lol Bay Yeah-rea) and get the other stuff working if I can.

Meanwhile

Seriously though, this is a stupid awesome gift that I don't deserve. Thank you!

Follow-up question, anyone know how to make a copy of an old mac harddrive called 'DataFrame XP 30'? I kinda wanna back it up so I have an image if/when the HD dies.

I looked, $50? I've got two kids and live in the bay area on a single salary, I can't afford that poo poo. Send me one though and I'll make it live on the internet, or find me a way to use a raspberry pi to do it, I got so many of those things ...... omg just had an idea.

Turns out I can possible do this: http://www.keacher.com/1216/how-i-introduced-a-27-year-old-computer-to-the-web/

I'm working on it... here's a quote from an answer to my question elsewhere:

/r/retrobattlestations posted:

I don't see any info on a dataframe, but can you tell us if it is a SCSI drive? Or is it plugged into the floppy port?
If it is SCSI, you can find another more modern-yet-retro machine that's also online to plug it into and use DiskCopy, dd, WinImage, etc., to create an image of it. SCSI cards are easier to find for 90s machines, I use a PCMCIA card on an older laptop from mid 2000.
If it uses the FDD port things a little get trickier... For me I'd get another SCSI drive (Zip drive?) and use DiskCopy on the + to image to drive into a file onthe SCSI drive, then the above route of another modern machine to copy the image file out via emulator or HFS exploring utility.

If someone better at such things than me knows whether an UltraSCSI (PCIe) host adapter can interface with a SCSI-1 device through an adapter, that would simplify things in terms of being able to image the drive.

Yeah, I really want to image that drive to both

a) save it
b) make it availble

I'm wondering if I cant mount it on that IRIS box and just do a DD

you could, but you'll still have the issue of having all the data stored on a computer of questionable reliability that's only like 4 years newer than the Mac :v

it should be able to get online with a 10baseT AUI, though.

here's a tutorial on resetting the root password: http://software.majix.org/irix/admin-password.shtml

see the "booting from CD" link down there. the Apple CD-ROM drive should work fine; I used the same one to reset the password on my Octane. yours would be an Indigo R4000.

you probably can but it wouldn't surprise me if the O2 actually mounted the HFS partition

how about a mini Bay Area meet-up?

I can bring a PowerBook or two with SCSI, a SCSI Zip drive, and a USB Zip drive, all of which I know to work well

we can copy the content off the drive (probably no need to image, we could use MPW to do the copy though to make sure we get any invisible files) and get the content onto something shareable

there's a 56k modem in it already fwiw, but it'd be fantastic if you could get that connected via SCSI to ethernet by daisy-chaining it off of the CD drive lol

(also p.s. if you look around on the hard drive you might find some, uh, nice pictures of your own as well)

I think the CD-ROM drive in the PowerBook 5300CE is IDE, not SCSI

not sure at the moment and don’t want to take the time to look it up

the 5300CE does still have a SCSI port, of course

the SCSI to Ethernet boxes got really scarce and expensive about a decade ago and haven’t gotten any easier to find, unfortunately

your better bet is to just use PPP to a RPi or something
