Not just some fringe wingnut site either, it's the wall street journal. Russian boogieman back in the mainstream news. It's like being back in the 80s. I have to admit, I'm a little ambivalent. As a kid before the fall of the Berlin Wall there was this sort of dread, the near certainty that one day the world would end in fire. It just takes a few guys getting control of a few missiles to trigger the other guy's retaliatory strike and then everybody launches. It seemed like there was no sane way out of it. Until suddenly, there was. But our need for enemies and apocalyptic threats didn't go away. Maybe Muslims will kill us. Or zombies. Or bird flu. OMG EBOLA IS GONNA KILL US ALL . . . no, wait, it's fine. Maybe a meteor will hit us? These are lameass existential threats. At least Russians were cool about it. Is the Cold War coming back? Do we want it to?
