A state of war between major powers would be loving awful and would literally destroy millions of lives even before a shot was fired because social & environmental and other non-vital programs would get axed all around the world to make room for bigger defense budgets and it would further destabilize existing conflict zones.

Teddybear posted:So this'll be a fun story this weekend, possibly: This brings up a difference in voting systems. In Finland we used to do presidential elections through electorate until 1994 when we switched to direct voting (1988 was a mix, there was both a direct vote in case one candidate got 50% of votes, and elector vote for the second round). What was different was that the 300 electors were actually the ones the people voted for. Under that system this wouldn't have worked. While they were free to vote as they liked (and last minute changes did happen) an elector who before the big day declared that he actually didn't want to support his party's candidate would likely have been left without votes. But then you couldn't directly apply that system to a First Past The Post country, Finland uses the D'Hondt proportional method.
