Just joined, because I started a personal wordpress blog to force myself to write more about movies as well as track what I watch/embarrass myself into getting through my backlog: https://letterboxd.com/aewade/

I end up doing a dumb thing where the stars I assign a movie are more relative to the genre or directors other works, depending on what I'm more familiar with, but never disclosing that like an idiot. Example, I went on a tear of Tati films and then saw Hell Or High Water tonight - Hell Or High Water is basically rated against the modern (ie post 80s) western, as well as relative to what its competing against in cinemas right now. The Tati I watched was more taken in comparison to the other shorts, and Jour de Fete was more in comparison to the silents it homages and betters, rather than the shorts. Its confusing and arbitrary, but I think there's very, very few films thay aren't worth watching at all. There's a lot of films that are dogshit in comparison to their peers, but it's rare that a film will have absolutely nothing to take away from. Fifteen of Many posted:

I'm wondering why they don't have an immediate list generated of the Year In Review stuff alongside those? Seems like it'd be an easy hook into the platform to release alongside the article.

Hey folks, I need suggestions for a list: http://boxd.it/Xkhg I'm in two minds about how strict I am on the criteria - Piranha 3DD should be eligible because it's a waterpark, but Piranha 3D might not be because it's an open body of water. If there's any similar flicks to add please let me know!

I finally finished my Tati watch-a-thon: https://letterboxd.com/aewade/list/watchin-and-rankin-jacques-tati/ I can't encourage people enough to watch every Tati film, if you haven't yet.

Escobarbarian posted:I'd definitely be interested in a recommended Tati order. Almost watched Playtime recently but now glad I didn't. Chronologically is pretty good - maybe sit Trafic in ahead of Playtime and if you have the Criterion set, shotgunning all the shorts ahead of them all is a nice mini-map that reflects his features almost perfectly. Playtime really is the be-all-end-all of Tati, but Parade is worth keeping for last because for me, it distills him away from his exploration of film and lets him just exist as a comic while strongly reinforcing his belief that comedy is not purely the realm of the performer, but includes the audience as well. As a film, it's undoubtedly his worst, but as a statement, it's such a starkly encapsulating piece that ends up being so fitting as his final feature. It took me two months to really muster up the courage to sit down and watch Playtime because of everything I'd heard of how gargantuan it is, but I really can't wait to get back into it again. It can't be stated how goddamn great it is and how much of an honest to god marvel it is to watch - outside of it though Tati is a master physical comedian and all the Hulot films are a joy

Outside of a shitload of Looney Tunes shorts, mine are Australian films - The Sentimental Bloke from 1921 (which is really, really, really good you guys) with 53 watchers and Backroads (Philip Noyce's feature debut) with 45 watchers.

Irritated Goat posted:I'm always at odds if I should be adding Looney Tunes stuff. It'd increase my watched number a ton but they aren't "movies" per se? Eh, I've logged Don Hertzfeldt stuff and a bunch of early American surrealism films from a Flicker Alley boxset, as well as Jacques Tati shorts so I may as well? It also lets me track the collection contents through lists, which is my own thing because the cases for the Looney Tunes packs don't have indexes for what's on there that are easily accessible, so it's either that or a Wikipedia list.

K. Waste posted:I don't know how y'all commit to writing reviews on Letterboxd, I don't even do ratings, I just say whether I liked that poo poo and move on. I get the mid-semester need to write a big block of bullshit occasionally, but I'm only really writing stuff if it's something I can use to push myself to research a bit deeper or if I can think of something moderately funny-ish to say. I stopped rating shorts like the Looney Tunes I'm watching and logging though.

Here's mine: https://letterboxd.com/aewade/year/2017/ I think I made a mistake by logging all the Looney Tunes shorts I watched, but I do love 'em. Didn't log comedy specials or anything though (or Twin Peaks, which is apparently appearing on Letterboxd soon according to their twitter), and I haven't marked anything as rewatches unless I've already logged it before, so my "first time" list is entirely inaccurate. I'm real mad at myself that I didn't drag myself out of bed to go see The Shape of Water for the first film of 2018 at an advance screening today.

LORD OF BOOTY posted:BTBR is a good mood piece, but it's not any more than that, and to be fair to it, it's not trying to be. Yeah, BTBR is an feature length art piece, Mandy is Cosmatos channelling that style into an actual narrative film. They're both great at being different things imo but hey, not everything is for everyone.
