Do monsters pick up items still? I haven't had an item that I just dropped be gone when I went back in a long time. I used to stash in lair, but now I just drop stuff wherever. Sometimes I make a book pile.

Flaming long blade before lair is a bit of a gamble, but you will almost always have some damage wands. With 6ish evocations you can blast down hydras pretty reliably and it is pretty quick to get skilled.

For the best chances of a win, you should jump on the discord and recruit spectators that can help you live. Gold is only good for shops unless you have gozag. I think you can search 'shop' and then ! and it will let you look in each one's inventory remotely. Zigs, don't trust me as I've only done one. I guess I'd say go a couple more floors once you start to get nervous. Which page are you checking? https://github.com/crawl/crawl/commits/master shows activity and the trunk game on jorgun rocks says it is 0.21-a0-91-ga5031da which matches the newest commit.

I have a scarf of repulsion and an amulet of reflection. rmsl only shows in the status line when I wear the scarf. Does one work better than the other? Do they stack?
