Except they can't do that because those gun control laws get challenged in court by republican lobbying groups or blocked by the national party

If states were allowed to decide their own gun control policies and if people were allowed to get legal recourse for gun crime there would be less of a push for it to happen at the national level in the first place.

I feel like gun control is a lost issue and we just have to accept that many, many people will die unnecessarily and things will only get worse (due to never being successful and losing votes over it) if we try to stop it

I don't really know what to do either but I checked my state's Democratic website (http://www.cadem.org/), then went to the county level site (http://acdems.org/) and saw they're having a meeting this Wednesday and I'm going to go there and agitate for Keith Ellison.

I just got home.

I drove an hour to attend my County Democrat Meeting and got to speak during open forum.

I said I was there because I was angry. Angry that Donald Trump is President and Hillary Clinton. That I was also angry that labor had been ignored this election. That we lost Wisconsin and Michigan, the most union states, because we didn't speak to labor issues. Donald Trump spoke to workers about how he was going to bring jobs back from China. He's lying of course, but lies are better than silence. I said Democrats need to make labor the #1 priory going forward from the local to the national level and the strongest voice for that would be to support Keith Ellison as the next DNC chairman.

Everyone applauded and a woman came up to me later to thank me for speaking and that they needed more rabble rousers. :3:

I'm feeling pretty good right now.

I'm going to one Wednesday, did you get any follow up information about how things move forward? I'm planning on agitating for him as well, but I want to do more than show up for a meeting every so often.

It seriously felt like an after school club or something. Obviously I'm completely naive about how this stuff works but it seriously blows my mind. There were about 10 people who showed up for the first time because of Trump, but how was that number not hundreds? How is their outreach so bad? It seems like they're entirely relying on people randomly showing up of their own accord. It doesn't make any sense!

As far as I can tell there's little to no effort being made to expand participation in the local parties, at least in CA. It seems focused on using what few people show up/volunteer to focus specifically on calling/knocking on doors/sending out mailers during election times.

All of them do, we just die too quickly for it to kill us off.

Even something that sounds relatively simple like an app/website where you could put in your address and it'd tell you what your county level Democratic organization is, their website/info, upcoming meeting times and locations, what you can do to get involved, etc, would really help, I think. people in blue states are generally happy though so why would politicians want to gently caress that up and risk getting tossed?

i'm not trying to be an rear end in a top hat btw, most people in CA are happy with their politicians and none of them ran on fixing prop 13 or strengthening unions (if anything most people hate unions here because of the prison guard one) but I'm 100% on board with supporting ones that actually propose those things

That's exactly my point, "most people are happy" is a bullshit reason and means you don't actually care about improving things. "Oh, things are fine for enough people so we always get voted in. Our work here is done" is hosed up. The Democrats goal isn't to actually improve things for anybody. There are tons of people suffering in CA and there's virtually no drive or push from Democrats to actually improve things for them.

Their weak leadership is reflected in how poorly Democrats are doing at county and state levels all across the country. That weakness leaves an opening for actual progressives to show up and push the party to the left since they have no way to stop it. That'd require a real grassroots effort, but it could be done

I think the key here is that California Democrats are liberal on social issues and are willing to accept somewhat higher taxes (especially if they only apply to people richer than themselves) to resolve some aspects of economic disparity. What they (and most others) will NOT accept is anything that they perceive as negatively affecting their own quality of life or the life of their children, even if it's for the greater good.

The latter include any repeal of Prop 13 (will drastically increase property taxes and/or lower housing value), attempts to increase housing density (will put more pressure on neighborhood public services and might make schools *gasp* more diverse), attempts to reform healthcare (single payer may result in a decrease in care quality for those who currently have good employer-sponsored health insurance), etc.

If the California democratic party starts pushing realistic solutions to any of the profound economic disparity issues facing the state, the backlash will flip California red. And the CA dems know this, so they will never do something this drastic.

Bullshit. If you improve peoples' lives and give them a reason to show up and vote, they will. You can do these things without hurting the middle class. This cowardly idea is just a smokescreen that lets people justify not making any effort whatsoever to do anything good for anybody.

California could absolutely be better but they don't even have the votes to repeal prop 13 yet (and when/if they do they'd likely start with raising the property taxes on commercial properties, rather than residential), urban density is increasing and starting to be addressed in Los Angeles (which I know more about than other counties). California is one of the most well-run states in the union and is continually improving even through severe drought and economic headwinds with virtually no help from the feds. Things could be better though, not disagreeing.

My point is that tepid progress while millions of people are suffering isn't enough. I'm not comparing it to other states, I'm comparing it to what it could be. The problem with the Democrats is they "push" (lol) for things to be slightly better than they are and then compromise down with the Republicans to making things only somewhat worse. They need to be pushing hard for things to be much better.

Gringostar posted:

What's your point here, dude? Things are clearly not good enough for millions of people. They're suffering and dying.
