I recently finished two and a half years apart from my then girlfriend, now wife. There's a lot of good advice already in this thread, but I would add that you absolutely have to make sure that you have good friends and a good social life of your own. Having your own solid support group will help you be a better partner to her, and give you someone to talk to when things get tough. You might also see if you can take a semester abroad at a University near where she lives (I assume that you are studying right now given the comment about being in classes 2/3 of the year).
