Why not just be friends with benefits? As already stated, set a timeline for when it can actually become an in-person relationship, continue to talk to each other, and if you are both single when the time runs out - go from there. I think this strategy is better because you don't have to worry about burning bridges or getting in arguments that you can't do anything about. Then when the time comes, if it was meant to be, it will be. Of course - you can still set ground rules with each other (I.E. no discussion about the local people you are dating).
