You're only going to see each other twice a year? Are you really more than just close friends at that point? I had a successful LDR that worked out and made it to just being a regular Relationship. But going back in time I absolutely would not do it again and that was seeing each other once or sometimes twice a month; let alone twice a year. But if you have a video etc you want to watch at the same time you can usually just load up the video on each computer and hit play at the same time.

Also you have to accept that you will often be really sad or depressed every time your friends hang out with their SO's and you're still waiting another 5 months and 1200 dollar plane ticket for your semi-annual date.

You can never convince anyone to not try the LDR they have their heart set on anyways because each one of them is sure that its going to be different for them.
