REMIND ME AGAIN HOW THE LITTLE HORSE-SHAPED ONES MOVE?
Trip report, I wasn't planning to march in the protest in my hometown but a good friend of mine was and so I ended up going along, and because he was in the front so was I. Good crowd, the local police are more good eggs than bad and spent most of their time chasing away drunk belligerent Trumpets and keeping traffic off the streets. Was good exercise and a fine time. Apparently I ended up on the news briefly, the Facebook page had a snippet of video and the comments were gross so I figure I personally pissed off some racists today. :)

I'm getting heckled for going to the Women's March in Denver by people who are going "oh look now you people decide to protest after Trump gets elected. Twitter school of activism lol". I don't even know what the retort for that even is beyond imagining what that person's face looks like with my fist buried in it.

"Tell that to the Tea Party." If retorting is something you're afforded the opportunity to do, anyway; the usual solution is to ignore them or shout louder.

Perez is a good guy who struck blow after blow for labor, so definitely give him a chance. If the choice is between him and Ellison it's pretty much a win win for the left.

But do ask the question above because tbh I don't know how most figures stand on it. If I had to make a guess it's somewhere around "Israel should stop with all the human rights abusing" given that was the position of the White House he served in.

Started the day with the DNC Chair forum thing with all the chair and vice-chair candidates, ended with protest at IAH. It's so crazy, when the forum ended there were maybe just 5-10 people in our group throwing around the idea of possibly going to the airport to do something, but by the time I arrived there were maybe over 100 people. Three DNC Chair candidates were there (including Perez whom I'm pretty sure our organizers hate so lol) and one vice-chair candidate who was my favorite with the forum answers during her session. There was also a family that had been detained that we got to see leave the airport which was really moving although we crowded them a bit too much. I've only been to 3 protests so far but this was the best one, lots of people came up to share their stories and to inspire and support each other, I cried like twice. Also heard a bunch of people signed up so now our DSA meetings are going to be moved somewhere bigger. I think this whole thing has taught me not to underestimate organizational power in the age of the internet. Did anyone go to the protest at JFK? That thing looked huge.

Echoing that you should donate to ACLU, these guys are our heroes, but this isn't their last battle.

If your organizers hate Perez on a personal level they're being myopic; oppose him as chair if you like but he's a good guy who is a strong friend of labor, precisely the sort any effective socialist movement will need as allies.

Cool stuff. More Dem Senators need to be held to the fire for yes votes.

This is literally straight out of the Indivisible Guide, btw. That poo poo works.

That specific case is weird, but I've had growing misgivings about Indivisible for a while. The nature of its "negative agenda" means that there is no clear replacement for the status quo other than "Democrats, I guess." This fits with the priorities/perspectives of people who seem most aligned with it (i.e., they are interested in how Democrats can win), although tbf most of the ones I have interacted with are not interested in supporting lame centrists.

That negative agenda is precisely why it is so effective. It is able to attract anyone who thinks maybe Trump bad without shutting people out by proposing solutions they may not be on board with. The point is to harness certain strategies the Tea Party employed to accomplish things those strategies are effective at doing. As we see in the fight over the Republican health care bill, it's fairly easy to cobble people together into a broad coalition to oppose a thing you don't like, but much harder to get them to agree on something new. That's the job of other groups than indivisible.

So Bernie Sanders has endorsed one of the Democratic candidates for Governor of Virginia, Tom Perriello, who is already the guy I was inclined to support. Obviously his endorsement isn't a magic wand but it's one more thing on the pile of things that makes me think a more passionate, outspoken guy is right for this particular historical moment. The other candidate is a good guy who has been a good lieutenant governor and I'd obviously vote for him in a general but with Trump in office the time has come for outspoken advocacy of resistance and progressive causes over genteel and measured movement.

IIRC he spent the last several years as the us special envoy to the congo, so he's been doing mostly diplomatic stuff of late. Seems it worked, though, they just had a major power sharing deal he helped broker.
