Max is banished from Bartertown, exiled to die in the desert. The Bartertown slave guy sends a monkey with a water bottle out to save Max. The monkey finds him, and Max is saved from dieing of thirst, for a bit. The next couple shots show him stumbling across sand dunes in a sand storm, and it looks like he's carrying the monkey tucked under his coat. He finally collapses face first, right on his front where the monkey would be, crushing it. Next scene/rest of movie, no monkey. Conclusion, Max crushed it to death. Also, Bartertown wastes a perfectly good horse when they exile Max. They send out a perfectly healthy animal to die in the dessert just because Max showed some empathy and didnt finish off Blaster. Movie seems to have a strong animal cruelty vibe running through it. Cannot recommend for children.

Look closely though, hair color pattern is quite different than Rescue Monkey. If anything this shows that they actually killed a monkey for real while making the movie, and had to replace it with another. I figure it had a bigger role originally, but the producers realized people would notice the swap, so they just did a couple quick 2-second shots to pretend no monkeys were killed in the filming of the movie. And yeah, the Pig Killer slave guy, and the conditions of underworld demonstrate the theme of animal cruelty that runs through the film.
