I mean, I once knew a guy who said his favourite bands were Nickelback and Def Leppard, unless he wanted to listen to something "sophisticated" in which he case he listened to Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd.

That's fine if that's what you're into, but what I personally don't get is how you can listen to Nickelback and listen to Def Leppard and still like Nickelback, because Def Leppard (and really most hair metal bands) were doing essentially the same thing as Nickelback except to my mind it's a lot more entertaining and generally had a higher standard of musicianship.

Nickelback somehow produced even worse imitators like Hinder and Saving Abel.

My least favourite is Theory of a Deadman, which is a band which Chad Kroeger "discovered" and got signed to his record label so he can "bring back rock and roll".

I think the most recent band to break through in a big-ish way is Greta Van Fleet, who I believe are Australians. I haven't heard any of their music myself so I don't know if they're any good or not.

Huh. I wonder who I'm thinking of. Wolfmother? Again, the sum total of my knowledge of Wolfmother is that interview from about a decade ago where Mike Patton hears them playing in the background and derisively asks, "What decade is this?"

My current music opinion which may be unpopular is that the peak era for Queen was 1976-1980 (i.e. just after Day at the Races through to The Game) when they were being denounced by the music press as "the world's first fascist rock band". Another opinion is that Thin Lizzy deserved to be as successful as U2 but I don't believe that's terribly unpopular.

Michelle Branch should have been more popular than almost any of her peers, including Avril. She's just better and didn't make that stupid hello kitty song.

I've heard she was really screwed over by record company politics. People wanted her to be more like Britney Spears, Avril Lavigne, Kelly Clarkson, Katy Perry or Taylor Swift at various stages in her career and the consequence was that she didn't get an album out for 14 years, by which point she'd been forgotten.

My opinion is that Taylor Swift is medium talent at best.

The best national anthem is "Ireland's Call".

At least it would be if it was the national anthem.

As it is, it's just a rugby song.

I have no place commenting on the politics but Amhrán na bhFiann/The Soldier’s Song is by far my favourite anthem in terms of the song. drat if it doesn’t hype you up to fight for freedom against someone.

Some of the Irish republicans used to boast that they were the most conservative revolutionaries ever to put through a successful revolution and honestly, they were probably right. I remember one dramatisation of it (curiously enough, in an episode of The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles, but I know enough actual history to say that it was reasonably accurate) where Sean O'Casey is angrily declaring that he won't be involved with the Easter Rising because, "I believe in a socialist Ireland, not an Ireland run by Catholic priests," which is what they ended up saddled with for the next few decades.

I have a seldom-used little notebook where I write down what people owe me and what I owe other people. If they never pay me back, I don't mind too much (even though I have a sort of avaricious attitude to money), because having the record of it is enough for me.

Writing Stabler out of SVU was the biggest mistake they ever made. He was what made the show. The watered down replacement caresi or whatever is just boring. The only good post-stabler episode was the gamergate one and that is solely because of the greatness of Ice T.

The incel one from this year was somewhat entertaining (also because of Ice T).

It included a scene where they go into "the dark web" and find a site called "Incel Message Board" where users have names like "Hateful One" and "Phallus Power".

I don't think peoples' religion or political opinions are intrinsically worthy of respect; it seems like an unsustainable position to me to suggest as much. I don't mean "equal respect", I mean "any respect at all". I'd go so far as to say that sometimes it can potentially be fair to be prejudiced against people based on their religious beliefs or political opinions, because those are things that they have chosen to believe.

Depends on how broad your brush is. You can be “prejudiced” against people who believe in religious violence without automatically disliking all catholics, muslims, buddhists, etc etc

What I mean is that if somebody introduces themselves to you and informs you that they are, for instance, a devout Christian or an observant Muslim, then I think it would not be unreasonable to infer (pending some demonstration from them to the contrary) that they are probably homophobic, because that's just part of their belief system. I think that prejudice in those terms - where you have made this judgment about someone on limited information - is fair enough. That being said, it remains a rebuttable presumption.

The one "nerd" hobby I've never really gotten the appeal of is action figures. I'm always reminded of that Simpsons joke where Comic Book Guy's rule for buying action figures is to get five of everything: one to open; one to trade; one to customise; one to display; and one to put away as an "investment".

(Though I suppose some action figures probably are better "investments" than over-printed "first issues" of comics with holographic 3D covers, aren't they?)

I once had a long argument in D&D about how political violence is wrong, even if the target are nazis. It's funny to me how that's an unpopular opinion (now?).

There's a disconnect in some places; I know a few people who would otherwise argue that killing Nazis is a good thing continue to insist that stuff like the Allies or the Soviets turning Nazi cities into rubble with tanks and planes during the Second World War was a "war crime". It doesn't seem altogether consistent to me. In both cases, you are killing the Nazis so why is one good and the other bad?

Anyway, that's probably too much like politics as well, so I'll go no further with it.
